I'm currently with a law firm that specialises in tax litigation and advisory. I'm looking to make a switch to a more transactional role of M&A, PE/VC, Gen Corp etc.

I have extensive theoretical knowledge in the above fields however I'm having a hard time convincing recruiters, can't even get hired for a job of 1 PQE.

Anybody out there that has made a career switch in a different practise area? How did you go about it? DM please

Not a lot of folks in India on these bowls, but jobsearching has some similarities. Use LinkedIn to find alumni from your school who are in areas you are targeting.

Ask to meet them for an informational interview or to get advice on their career path.

Don't ask for a job--just be likeable and inquisitive.

At the end of the interview, say, " Wow! You insight and advice has been so helpful. Could you think of one or two colleagues I could speak with?" They will pass your name along. Write a nice thank you. Follow up! You will have a job soon!

I’m looking for some resources and/or recruiters to help me find a job in Houston. I worked in Big 4 audit for a year and 4 months. I am currently working in global finance/accounting for a major record label. I would like a financial analyst, staff accountant, or an internal audit position (ordered in preference from most wanted to least). I have also considered joining Big 4 again but only if it is an advisory position like FDD or deals. Thank you in advance!

If you go for interview and you sort of know that the person interviewing you might be curious about something on your negative on your resume like why is there a gap or why were you in XX role for so long?

Do you address it pre-emptively? Or does that show insecurity and you leave the elephant in the room and wait till they ask you?

I guess this is more in the case of networking than interview like do you make your own story?

I’m seeing lots of posts about really bad losses. If you trade you’re going to lose money - hopefully not all the time, but many positions will be mistakes. But you need a process to find ideas and manage positions. Two books you should read are “The New Trading for a Livinng” and “The Laws of Trading.” Both look at psychology, process, and risk in different ways that can help you work out your own process. The next 18 months will be much harder than the last 18 - time to start learning.
