OW1 - not the same conversation. OP provided a concrete situation, with factual chain of events... based on which, it looks to be, his inference doesn’t sound logical. What you’re taking about is a greater conversation.

People on this post immediately claiming it’s fake are so ignorant. If you were queer you’d know what it’s like to cover 24/7 in public to avoid this exact thing. As much as you try, sometimes people just know. Hate crimes don’t have reason. And if you’ve never experienced one, you just won’t get it. If your first reaction was to second guess that it could be a hate crime, consider yourself lucky and re-educate yourself on the reality of all types of minorities.

File a police report
Report it and get yourself checked ASAP for internal injuries.
Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts. To add bit of a context, as I got out of my hotel with my friend and standing outside for our Uber, we were joking around, laughing, and I was being silly - posing with my long jacket. My assumption is he saw us in that way and did not like it and so thought to punch. It was relatively an empty street. This is the first time something like that has happened to me so regardless of me being gay or not, punching someone randomly and running is not acceptable. Luckily, he hit me on side of skull so I wasn’t hurt much. What if it was my face or nose? This incident will haunt me for a bit even if I try to move on quickly.

I’m sorry this happened. I’m surprised the attacker was able to tell you are gay if all this happened in a short span of time. In any case, you pay taxes like everyone else so you have full rights to avail of police services. Being on a visa has nothing to do with it. If I were you I’d file a compliant even if it doesn’t lead to the perpetrator being arrested. The crime database needs legitimate data points.
let us return to first principles. sorry you got punched btw. now did he punch you because your were gay, or did he punch you (who happens to be gay)? if the former, on what grounds do you believe that your sexuality caused the attack?
