1. You do not need to work at BCG to be hired by Google. You also do not need an MBA or an advanced degree, or even a BA
2. Nobody in GBO at Google will care about your college major
3. BCG sponsors high-performing Associates to attend business school after ~2 years of work, so long as they agree to return to BCG after business school for 2 years. With your work experience, you would be ineligible for the Associate role and would be applying to BCG for the post-MBA Consultant role. This sponsorship practice is common among MBB and tier 2 consulting firms (Accenture, Kearney, Deloitte, etc.), and again, is typically reserved for high performing post-college hires
4. BCG does not offer remote work positions for Consulting Track candidates at this time. Offers are contingent upon agreement to travel as necessary for casework
5. If you’re interested in Google I recommend you join the Googlers and Xooglers fishbowl to ask former Googlers for role-specific advice
Thank you so much for your insight. I’m considering all my options as I really want to build a firm foundation in Operations and Strategy, rather than use my former success to jump past the fundamentals which I could still use. My thoughts on developing my skills with a consultancy have a lot to do with this mindset toward developing a strong foundation. I think spending 3-5 years in a consultancy makes sense to gain the experience as well as an education. Looking back on my career, I think I’ve been enticed by an exciting title just to be disappointed more than once. I believe that I will succeed in my career by building a solid foundation of education and experience in the thing that I want to do, knowing full well that I could get ahead of the curve by using the flashy titles I’ve had. Ultimately, I would just be undercutting myself. Besides, I think the heart of operations is about infrastructure; I don’t think I want to cut corners on my own foundation because I would just be cutting corners for all my future clients by doing so.
So, you are right. I don’t need any of the education, nor the experience to possibly get where I want to go. But, I want it. If I were to skip the experience and education and just get the job, it might become another title that did nothing but disappoint, because I didn’t put in the work to earn it.
The Biz Ops team is basically internal consulting. So yes you need prior Consilting experience for these roles, ideally MBB.
If you want to gef into Google, find a role that your skillset and experience match as closely as possible and even meet some of the preferred qualifications.
Keep in mind that the company receives an exorbitant number of applications for each open role.
You should know (and likely do) know you are the exception, not the rule.
A quick search on LI shows the vast majority of BizOps resources at Google have ex consulting exp, and for most that exp is at MBB.
