Am I just old school in thinking that a suit is always the safe bet?
Really depends, if interviewing at a place with tech/startup culture, suit can be a real misstep
Why don't you ask the recruiter about the culture and dress accordingly...
A suit for a first impression will signal you’re not a cultural fit
Suit for interview and first day impression, then conform to culture, as appropriate. Tie vs sweater under jacket (winter), depending on generation and job type? Director level may be client facing and should mirror client expectations not firms. 😊
PD1, this is not a client facing consulting role.
dark jeans and sport coat. Ditch the coat if you find your interviewer/s aren’t wearing one once you get there.
I would wear the suit and no tie at least. But probably tie. And then acclimate to culture once you get the job. My home office is fairly laid back during week (no ties or jackets), but if someone showed up dressed like that I would judge negatively
“Suit is always the safe bet” is definitely old school, and could leave you DOA as “culturally clueless.” Peter Thiele’s perspective is a bit extreme, but indicative of fashion ideology at many tech firms who worship Apple’s “Think Different” campaign. https://www.businessinsider.com/peter-thiel-hates-suits-2014-8
Your best starting point: check out what people are wearing in company photos on Glassdoor. https://www.glassdoor.com/Photos/Intuit-Office-Photos-E2293.htm
Next stop: ask someone in your LinkedIn network who works there.
Another surprisingly simple solution: call the main corporate number and ask the operator: they will probably be pleased to help you out
If the recruiter does a lot of work with the client, they may also be helpful, but they may not know the details
I wouldn’t go full suit. For sure, no tie
Director level requires a suit for sure.
