Follow cusomary protocol.
Wait until the offer is in wrting and signed on both ends, background check complete, and have negotiated a commited onboarding date. Then give your notice. Two weeks will suffice. However, try to leave earlier. They might have a readily available replacement. If that the case, someone from your team can pick up your existing load, or your lead can roll up his sleeves for a while and takeover those responsibilities until a suitable replacement is found. Explain that you will do a detailed handover and that you will be on a standby for support a couple of of days after you part ways. Send an amicable thank you note to your existing organization. Connect on linked with all your existing colleagues, partners, clients. Don't burn bridges. - J
OP is still in the happy place of believing that they are critical or irreplaceable at their firm. Everyone is replaceable, be selfish and take care of yourself first
Wait till offer in hand
Don’t feel bad, this is part of life. Everyone thinks they’re critical to a project / company but in reality they can transition everything in two weeks. It sucks but it happens all the time.
Do not say anything until you have an offer in writing.
I’d go beyond offer in hand and wait until you’ve signed and (depending on situation) pass the background check. Would suck to give notice, have new gig fall through, and be screwed. Delay start at new place if you need.
Wait till offer in hand
If the SM left in two weeks the project wouldn’t even be jeopardized 😂
Everyone is replaceable . Jeopardize the project... big words
Gotta be offer in hand to put in notice. Feel free to delay start date if you feel the need to send off the project wellz
I concur with C1.. look out for yourself! No one else will!
A bird in hand is worth avoiding a lot of depression and anxiety if things don’t work out. Isn’t that how that saying goes?
A3 - healthy paranoia. Heard too many stories of people who reveal new jobs prematurely only for it to backfire.
Don't give them more than 2 weeks
Give two weeks and leave. Project is heating up and a lot is happening. Feel bad, but also dont want to get an offer and be blackballed if I don’t get another job quickly
Interesting MCK1, what makes you think you may fail the background check? Skeletons in the closet ?
I’ve seen people give 4 weeks notice if they are in a critical spot
Two weeks is more than enough time to replace you.
You don’t need to share until you have an offer
No. So interesting to me that people won't put themselves first . The minute you tell your SM they have to start looking for someone in the best interest of their project. Which means they will probably have to let people know you are leaving. People leave all the time. The firm won't break when you leave.
OP: wait till you have confirmed order and joining date agreed on. In corporate world, especially the big-4, you are numbers. Your SM or Partner will not think a second to throw you out of project and inform HR about your job hunting in the name of client or practice needs
