$40.000 a year. What state are you in. No wonder you want (need) to leave education!
I’m in Oklahoma and that’s the salary is laughably low here as well. In the $40’s and I’ve taught ten years. I left Public ed 2 years ago after I came home at midnight after staying late working on IEPS and found my husband dead. I’m only 43.
I worked in the private ed sector a couple years and just got laid off right before Christmas so I’ve been looking for work these two months in the mental health field as my degree is in that area (I’m alternatively certified sped) but have not had any luck, though the timing couldn’t had been much worse. It’s a shame that us “helpers” who do so much to add value to the community are so drastically undervalued and underpaid. Surely things are ready for a change. These used to be such revered lines of work.
40 K is the minimum salary in Illinois with a BA.
Maybe consider moving states?
Maybe a change in grades or subject area? Considering moving to a higher paying state? If not, you can move into a lot of different positions. A friend just left and got a job as a project manager. You could work in dispatch for police, customer service rep, communications, etc. There are lots of jobs for you.
One thing to consider about staying…principles pass through. Teachers are usually there to stay. My principal was scared to death of me. It wasn’t because I’m intimidating, but ANY teacher can talk circles around principals about education.
Well said :)
Cost of living
80K in California is adjusted to 60K in Texas because of cost of living
80K in Cali gets you a studio apartment
40K in Oklahoma feels like 80K in Cali
$500k in Cali is a condo but a mansion in Texas
It sounds like you’re ready for a change, and I think you’re making a great decision by focusing on your well-being. I left teaching last year to become an academic advisor, and it’s been such a relief. Have you explored roles in higher ed?
What advanced degrees did you need to be an academic advisor? I am interested in this role as well.
$40k a year with a Master’s degree?! That’s insane.
I live in SoCal where, yes it’s true, there’s a higher COL. But in my 20th year I’m making $120k - no Master’s degree, no PhD. Hold a Bachelor’s of Science + Secondary Teacher Credential. Live quite decently 👌 Compared to other states, I feel like I hit the lottery.
I suggest you move to the costal states (either West or East) - those states have the highest paid teachers.
And high COL as well. It all depends on the COL. This is my 21st year teaching in NJ, I have my Masters, 45+ credits plus in-field and I'm making 104k at the moment in one of the better paid districts. Rent is ridiculous here, I was forced to buy, insurance, groceries, everything is very expensive. I make a decent living, but as a single mother, I still struggle.
Go hang out in the math lab at the local university and date a future engineer. Don’t marry someone inside the education field
In Massachusetts, you could take a free 8 week course in Biomanufacturing, and interview with top employers in the field. Your starting salary would be around 70k, and you could certainly earn promotions as you gain experience and take learn more STEM.
I love my present job, but still receive job postings and often look to see what is out there because I have learned that situations change and to always keep the options open. Good luck.
We are here for you! Prayers going out for your success
My principal just said I don’t know how to do my photography job. I have 14 years shooting for Ironman and Outside Magazine. I 100% know she doesn’t know what she’s talking about
