Any guess how many people are laid off from Publicis sapient in past few days? Really scared for my future as I'm also under probation period and deeply regret for my choice of joining this firm...I don't understand why were they recruiting peeps when they were short of projects. Publicis Sapient

If I was in my 20s and just entering advertising, I would 100% retrain to do something else instead. No question. You’d be insane not to.
No joking, learn a trade like a plumber or electrician and you’ll be set for life
Sure, the industry has its challenges, a lot of them even (a lot of industries do). But I don’t buy into the doom and gloom. I’m in the top 10% earners in the countries for coming up with ads, working with great directors and traveling all over the world. I’m not complaining.
TLDR: “Not my monkey until it happens to me.”
I’m just voting for populist political candidates who tell me what I want to hear.
I see you cd
I’m 57 and counting the days until I can retire. The holding company model has sucked all the fun out of advertising.
I'm in my 20s and in a sh*tload of undergrad debt. Freaking out. Planning a shift because I'd like to be a homeowner one day. Thinking of joining the military.
I’m going to either work in a supermarket or ask for an adult internship in another field!
Started out in conceptual creative advertising in my 20s working at a holding company agency. I saw the writing on the wall even then, and pivoted my skills and talent in my 30s to working in-house for big brands and at pure breed digital/social agencies where AI is integrated.
I learnt early on that Advertising/Marketing is an industry that shifts and looks very different every 5-10 years. It's a cynical business so I've always adapted and learnt new skills and moved on. Not terribly worried but also not super confident either.
Ideally by mid-40s I'll either transition to working at smaller boutique shops where I'll coast for the next little bit or just take up a chill job at a much lower pay before retiring.
More like mid-30s
I'm 39 and I'm making a career sidestep into UI/UX design. Graphic design has been such a slog with terrible pay.
I completely agree with all of the comments. We are expected to work longer and longer hours and with all of the consolidations and the client pressures around cost, leaders at these companies don't see us as people. We are just bodies that they want to crank out a ton of work.
Yep and then they cut us cause of age and salary.
Can you be more specific? I do agree - things have changed. And not for the better. Curious about your perspective
OK - here is a take for GCD 1 and the Intern:
Simply put, IPG (Interpublic) had been struggling for some time & could not generate significant organic growth in revenue or profit. In any industry, when that happens you are bait for consolidation. Omnicom, like many of our industry, was also finding growth tough, but is better off than IPG & WPP. Invariably, in any consolidation the new management seeks efficiencies - and the market demands it. There will be layoffs, and over time, some of the IPG units may simply get folded into Omnicom units. Additionally, AI is going to have a pretty significant impact across our whole industry. The name of the game in a career is to be working in a business/industry that is growing. We are in a tough metamorphosis. With marketing/clients now demanding very high levels of personalization in both creative & media at scale, technology is literally the only way to keep the business viable. There will be lots of boutique & smaller independent operations, but even they will have to be major adopters of tech stacks to keep the programs moving on time/budget.
While I certainly don’t like it, the general trend will be toward operating with fewer people - and certainly less full time people - as clients continue to want to be more project oriented and less committed to any particular resource.
For what it is worth, this has been the outcome in lots of “creative” industries - architecture, interior design, publishing, music, motion pictures/TV, etc. The level of content keeps going up, but the employment keeps going down.
I'm 28 and almost done paying off my student loans. What else am I supposed to do???
