If I was in my 20s and just entering advertising, I would 100% retrain to do something else instead. No question. You’d be insane not to.
No joking, learn a trade like a plumber or electrician and you’ll be set for life
Sure, the industry has its challenges, a lot of them even (a lot of industries do). But I don’t buy into the doom and gloom. I’m in the top 10% earners in the countries for coming up with ads, working with great directors and traveling all over the world. I’m not complaining.
TLDR: “Not my monkey until it happens to me.”
as somebody in their 40s with a mortgage and kids, I would've loved to have known about this complete industry crash 20 years ago.
Writer 1 - that’s a lot of industry criticism coming from a writer who doesn’t use paragraphs breaks or proofread.
my optimist side is hoping for a rejection of ai slop and a renewed appreciation for actual craft and ideas. but yes my pragmatic side is hunkering down in a bunker for the foreseeable future.
we’re due for a creative renaissance, damnit!
i’m kinda just banking on an alien invasion or a meteor tbh
I like where you’re going
OP, are you referring to how hard it is to find a job? Or the lower pay? Or the accelerated time lines? Or how everyone communicates via Slack and can no longer collab face to face? Or how people are pretty uptight and there is very little laughing anymore? Or how the account people direct the work more than the GCDs?
Nailed it. Lack of fun is just the tip of the iceberg.
Waiting for everyone to become electricians so I can keep all the business for myself.
But the real answer us just broadening my aperture in terms of things I’m willing to learn about - Logistics, algorithmic trends, economics. In my mind the only difference between what we do and what McKinsey does is McKinsey branded themselves better and didn’t kick the analysts out of the room. There will always be a market for novel solutions to business problems. It’s just not enough anymore to be the craftsman for someone else’s strategy.
Ad school's must be dying. A degree or masters in this field is like investing in Kodak during the 80's.
Some are, but honestly I think it's predatory for these schools to even be open at this point. I think the responsible thing to do would be to at least pause operations to see how the ad industry is shifting and then adjust their curriculum. At this point, the only ones who really seem to be benefitting are the "professors" and staff at these schools. Wait to see how to adjust instead of just sucking up tuition and spitting these people out into the abyss.
I have no idea what else I can do. Guess I’m staying on this sinking ship.

I think for some of the younger creatives who have been in the business for less than six or seven years, they might not see how much things have changed for the worse. But yes, I don’t see myself in this business in 2028. Maybe even 2027. Still working on my exit strategy.
Please share ideas about what to jump to.
Yep, I’m 28 - been in the business for five years. Already planning my exit out of the discipline+industry and I’m hoping I can start something new in the next year. I’ve seen too many talented people laid off recently and they’re struggling to find work, especially folks between 35-45 with families and mortgages under their belt. Maybe I’m too cynical, but I don’t think they’re finding work again in this continually shrinking industry.
Exactly. Ai is the bull in the room bending creatives over the desk, and corporations are cheering them on. Who needs originality when you have profit?
Oh OP I am so close. Hoping my end is in 2-3 years. I cannot wait to get out.
Oh dear, dear Creative 4—when I say out I mean OUT. No more workie for me. After 30+ years I am dunzo. Would have already been done a few years ago but then….covid.
We’re not okay. Thanks for asking.
So interesting. You people have been so discriminatory against older folks, (OK Boomer!) that you can’t take advantage of their experience transitioning from mechanicals to digital. There are lessons to be learned. Unfortunately the holding companies are falling all over themselves to get rid of anyone with a gray hair.
I started my exit strategy about a year ago. I think I’ll be 100% out in 2 years. Basically going into biz for myself with my husband - 100% out of the ad world. Cannot wait. I loved what I did for decades and now it makes my skin crawl opening my laptop every morning.
I’d like to know what industry too. As a producer I am also wondering what other options there are out there.
Freaking out.
I am 31, but I started in the industry late. I have worked at two agencies considered top 10 independent by Cannes. In May, I quit my job because I wanted to return to my country, and my Visa was expiring. It's been incredibly hard finding a job. But I don't know what else I would be doing. Sadly, I love advertising and don't see myself doing anything else.
What did you study or do before advertising? Do you see yourself working back in your first career?
