Interviewing with Facebook (Meta) soon and have some questions about the mobility and career progression if I am coming in as a product specialist and want to move in to pm work. Anyone with any insights on what the average time for promotions or how hard it is to move to other areas within Meta after joining?
I feel like if they are both equally appealing and comp is similar it’s a good time to try the niche company. They large company will always be there if/when you decide to move on but the unique ones are less frequent

That’s very true. And this niche one is actually kind of recession proof as they get a good amount of government funding. Salary is similar at both. Probably more responsibility at the niche job but could be a ladder into a lot of different paths.
I'd probably jump solely on it being FASCINATING (but I should note, I'm not in a traditional role so my perspective may be skewed). Other option, since they're also remote, is to see if they're open to you working in a consulting or advisory role semi-PT, and revisit the convo of going FT after that. Doing it this way will allow you to peek behind the curtain without taking too much risk.
Both sound like good opportunities, so my questions would be:
1) How established/stable is each company and industry? What is your personal appetite for risk?
2) What are your career goals? Do the responsibilities of one role interest you more? Does being the most senior marketing person sound like something you want?
For myself, for instance, I do not want to be the head of HR; it’s just not something I’m interested in. I’ve had companies that sound interesting reach out for HR roles, but if it’s the top role I don’t pursue it because no matter how good the company I know the job isn’t what I want. It depends on what your goals are.
The other question is how you feel about large vs. small companies - do you have experience at both? At a smaller company you’ll likely be creating processes and constantly adapting, “building the plane in the air” - you may wear many hats, but may also have a lot of opportunity to innovate and impact how things are done. At a larger company, processes are likely established and more stable, and your role may be more narrowly defined; it may be less chaotic feeling, and you may be performing a function vs. defining it. People often prefer one or the other.
If the company and/or industry is fascinating, stable, meets all of your requirements (comp, benefits, remote, etc.), and the role will allow you to gain substantial experience for future opportunities, why would you say no?

It’s just very niche and nothing at all to do with the rest of my background. I’ve worked in marketing for the education industry for 15 years and this is a science/environmental company so it’s a weird move! I’m not at all opposed to leaving education - in fact the companies I’ve been interviewing with are EdTech companies and the plan was to go from EdTech to Tech and then do whatever I want from there. But this is just a total 180! I am excited by the work and the team all seem fantastic, salary and benefits are good, but it’s just not the plan. I feel like I should just go for it though. Most people don’t like their jobs. I could love this one.
