Is boarding horses a Sch C or Sch F activity?
Industry is role based meaning the current tax director needs to leave before they hire a person internally or externally for the position.
When a role opens up they generally are required to post the position, you generally have to apply and go through the interview process and you will be competing with people both inside and outside your organization. Rarely would a company grow to add on another tax director role (which would likely follow the same process).
My last role in industry there was a 60+ person tax department and two directors. They went through a structure study and eliminated one of the positions and just expanded span of control and now there is only one director. The current director worked with the company for over 20 years before being promoted to that role which only happened after someone retired.
I left industry and came back to public.
Btw how big is the company to employee 60+ in tax department?!
Not likely to be promoted in industry. I’ve seen many more outside hires to fill leadership roles than internal promotions. You kind of stagnate at whatever role you were hired at, with the exception of maybe associate and senior roles, which I have seen promotion in.
SM2- I think you answered the reason why. Senior leadership often requires skills that the in-house people don’t possess. If they’ve been at the same company a long time they haven’t seen what’s happening in the industry, what works in a large group, been exposed to new ideas that would make the group more successful or efficient… I’m not not saying it never happens, just not that frequently.
Every company is different. My company looks at individual performance. I joined as a Senior Manager, but after 5 years I was promoted to director based on the body of work and value I produced. I have a peer who did not get his role until his boss retired (director). Sorry if you’re not getting the answer you want, but when you’re interviewing, I’d just ask how do they elevate people in the department who deliver results and value.
