Also think the strategy skills you’re developing in terms of change management, organizational dynamics, cultural transformation, etc. So much goes into internal comms above and beyond actually communicating with internal stakeholders. Good luck!
Same boat. I got a little experience by supporting a couple leaders for internal comms, and getting to know their “story” so well they asked for external help on specific projects (a little social media, speeches, talking points for panels). Not a lot but a start. Interesting question — hoping others have more to share.
Thanks for responding, and I’m glad I’m not the only one! The more I look for director level roles, the more I see them requiring both internal and external experience.
I market an agency, and am building a website now. (Haven’t moved yet, but am actively searching.) I think as long as you showcase the types of work you do, like media relations, interns comms, executive positioning, etc. you can showcase the process so that recruiters can connect the dots on similarities. Also, if you have experience in working with your agency partners, I’d showcase that as well so that it shows you have an idea of how we work. Our skills are entirely transferable - just find your best way to showcase that.
Start scheduling meetings with industry reporters to introduce yourself as a resource. You don't handle external but you can certainly route a media request to the person who does. Also think about booking journalists to participate in internal panel events. Doesn't hurt to build relationships then talk in your interviews about how you can leverage them.
There are good opps to bridge your internal experience by doing external comms that hit employees - LinkedIn content, targeted social. Could you do some Talent Acquisition? That's a great way to use skills and knowledge you have about culture and fit for a key external audience. There are also reporters who cover internal/TA/HR/culture and you could become their point of contact to build your network. Good luck!
