Interviewing for some big healthcare agencies in nyc. Is being a creative in pharma as bad as I’m expecting?

No, people crap all over pharma but it’s not that bad. Launches can be absolutely brutal at times and there’s a little bit of a learning curve since everything is heavily regulated but it pays well and seems a bit more stable. Ultimately it’s all personal preference.

like

Definitely not! I’ve had more job offers (both pharma and non) since starting in it than ever in my life. That being said, it’s a total applicant’s market right now so I’d explore your options first and if taking this job, ask for as much money as possible

like

Here’s what I love about being in healthcare (solely my experience): better pay and hours (compared to my other ad friends outside of pharma — I have double the salary of most of the peers I graduated with), you learn a niche skill set (I have healthcare agency recruiters reaching out to me on LinkedIn every week for my healthcare experience — I don’t worry about finding a job next time I want to make a switch. I can just go to the recruiters on LinkedIn and bam. Done.), way more job stability, steady, and has meaning. I’ve been on video shoots and involved in market research working directly with patients. Hearing them talk about living with a chronic condition and mentioning how X brand has helped their quality of life or how our deliverables help them have better discussions with their doctors or understand their condition better just makes me feel like the work I’m doing is actually helping people.

Yeah it might not be the most groundbreaking designs or catchiest taglines, but it’s helping specific populations of people manage their conditions better and not feel so alone.

It’s certainly not for everyone. But can be a great place for those that care about the above. If you want to create work that relates to pop culture, the latest overnight trends, has quick release times, and gets a lot more visibility etc. then it might not be for you — which is okay!

like

This is such a great take on this industry. Thanks for sharing!

like

You can make good money. But pharma is it’s own world and can be hard to get out of.

like

Not bad just different.

like

Depends what you’re looking for.
More pay? Yes.
Better hours? Typically.
Creative level of work? Terrible.
Regulatory (lawyers) have the final say and will reduce your work to the lowest common denominator of a terrible metaphor. But it all depends on what you’re looking for in your next gig.

like

It might suck the life out of you, but it's steady work. Life is all about compromise and pharma isn't the worst compromise to make.

like

Yeah, probably.

You really have to think of it as an entirely different industry than consumer advertising.

The standards for design and art direction are abysmal and almost certainly much lower than what you’re used to. That’s just as well, because by the time you’re on your 20th round of revisions, or trying to jam another 300 words into a print ad that’s already grossly overstuffed with copy, you will hopefully be past the point of caring.

The creative opportunities, such as they are, will probably be few and far between. Unless your creative directors have come from outside of pharma, they probably don’t know what a good idea looks like, so you’re likely to find the process frustrating and arbitrary. If by some miracle you do get a good idea for something sold through, there’s a really good chance that it will be ripped to pieces by your client’s lawyers.

That all being said, the pay is decent and the job security can’t be beat.

like

I judged a major pharma show a couple of years ago and was very impressed by the level of conceptual thinking and execution on display. And they still do print, if you're into that hopelessly old-skool sort of thing.

like

It’s not the most fun, and a lot of health agencies really don’t make an effort to push the creative beyond the status quo (or even try to push regulatory’s limits)

It's not that bad. In some cases you might be working on something that actually helps people in their day-to-day. That feels good knowing you're not just making trash and polluting. Especially just to win some awards. It's not easy though and there are definitely some learning curves

There are good pharma agencies and bad pharma agencies, just like mainstream advertising.
