It’s not ideal but doable — I’ve done it, but you’ll likely want to live somewhere more affordable like Brooklyn with roommates unless you have cash coming from elsewhere.
For reference, the minimum OT exempt salary in NYC is $58,500. If they hire you at less than that they are supposed to pay you overtime past 40 hours in a week.
Live in Brooklyn with roommates and you’ll be fine.
In 2018 I had a $55k salary, living in a bushwick loft with 6 roommates and paying $850. It was a bit tight but the beauty of big cities like NYC is that there are plenty of things to do for free/cheap
Manhattan is pretty boring, all the fun things happen in Brooklyn anyways
I managed with 60k as a junior writer in 2016 with a wife and a newborn, in Brooklyn.
It’s doable.
Thank you. The struggle was real!
It’s very possible with roommates.
There are parts of Brooklyn that are just as pricey as Manhattan. Def find something that fits your budget. Get roommates if you can.
I live in Manhattan with a 60k salary right now. It’s doable but also definitely depends on bills you need to pay (student loans, car payments, etc.)
nope, i am carless in manhattan
I pulled off living off 60k in Manhattan in 2019. It was painful but I was living frugally back then and would cook at home often. If the agency had an event I would always go for the free food (and drinks).
Probably less painful in another borough with roommates, for sure. Trains are $2.75 no matter how long your commute ends up taking, and you probably will just WFH at least some days of the week due to current events, so there’s that.
I lived in Manhattan with $30k salary so yes. If you can’t you need to manage your finances better and budget. You’d definitely need roommates.
I lived with 4 roommates in deep brooklyn at 44k, if they weren't assholes I would have been happy living there, aside from the absolute hellish commute (that wouldn't be hellish if I worked 9-5, but late nights and early mornings for pitches meant I hardly slept 8/hrs a night for a year). But with commute out of the picture now, you'll be fine if you actually take the time to explore and enjoy your neighborhood.
I lived by myself in manhattan at 55k and I loved the peace of mind but saved zero dollars for 2 years, packed every lunch, and went to sleep for dinner. Had more fun in the city than ever before, but holy hell was I starving from rent and bills.
You'll need at least one roommate until you make ~95k if you want to live in manhattan.
You can make it work. Definitely try to find roommates, if not people you know there are a ton of housing websites that you can find people on
It’s doable but if you want to enjoy your life life, you won’t be saving much for your future and unexpected expenses like dental surgery will really hurt.
It’s definitely doable. I make $65 have crazy study loans. Currently living with one roommate in bed Stuy for $2500 total ($1250 each). Would highly recommend setting aside some money for normal savings and if you can stay on a family/partners healthcare, it makes a big difference.
I did it but I wasn't paying student loans or anything like that. I had roommates and lived in Astoria, which is safe and cheaper
I loved Astoria until my roommate and I came home to discover we were robbed
it’s doable if you have roommates and live in brooklyn, LIC, astoria, or even jersey city.
I lived in Manhattan (UWS) as a junior in that salary range, but with two other roommates.
Its doable but you wont be saving much. That’s how much I was making as a junior AD in 2019. I would aim for the 60k
I was making 55 as a junior in 2014. That’s a rough salary
I mean that’s a rough salary for today. 8 years ago it was okay but I wasn’t saving, was barely contributing to 401k and eating lots of free meals at the agency.
I make 58 and I’ve been fine in Jersey City with 2 roommates. Just have to be smart about your money and be realistic about budget your budget when picking apartments, how much to spend on groceries/food delivery, etc. - the basics of budgeting.
According to Glassdoor, a junior AD in NYC makes an average of $59K. Depending on the size of your agency, you probably can negotiate more just to have some cushion for yourself.
