A relative is raising a teenage son with her ex-husband. They have joint physical custody. The ex-husband has re-married. When the son is in his care, he often leaves the son at home in California with his (new) wife when he travels for work (which is often). The relative wants her ex-husband to leave their son in her care when he travels out of town but the ex-husband disagrees. Working on a divorce where the father is claiming that he is unemployed because of the previous administration’s actions with DACA (he was brought to the States as a child). I know that the memo rescinding DACA was ultimately vacated—but OC is unsure whether this would count as voluntary unemployment for child support purposes. I believe it does as the application period to renew DACA benefits was reopened in 2020. Thoughts?

I’m a second year associate at a small, but reputable firm. My caseload is almost entirely made up of clients who were referred to one of the partners but the partners are too busy so I end up taking the case. The clients are told up front that an associate, rather than a partner will be taking his/her case. What’s a good starting salary for a newer attorney? I’ve never worked anywhere but in the public sector (even before becoming an attorney). What are your client follow-up/communication policies or practices? I’m hearing more and more that clients don’t like the long periods of time with little to no contact. From my perspective, since I bill for my time, unless I have an update or need something, I don’t initiate a call. Small firm (my boss, me, & a paralegal). After a hearing I did not handle, boss intended to seek review of the ruling in its entirety. What was communicated to me by paralegal was to seek review of a portion.

Seeking review is now time-barred. Boss is not upset, but this is 1 case & 1 problem. There are other cases & other stories.
