Recruiters are mostly useless and likely failed at their first career choice. Some get paid just for collecting resumes and have no problem ghosting you. They often get commission, which lowers the salary you'll get from the company.
It's very hard to find a good recruiter. Their main interest is to place people quickly, regardless of whether it's the right role for them. Placing 2 people in a week at 70k each is better than working hard for 1 person and placing them for 85k.
You are way better off applying on your own, through referrals if possible. Higher salary potential (since no commission) and you can negotiate salary yourself. The only time recruiters are better is if you find one that (1) actually works in your interest and (2) has access/connections to roles that aren't public.
As a former recruiter, most of what you said is false. I agree it can be hard to find a good recruiter, but they have to be viewed as just another resource at your disposal.
Their commission absolutely does not reduce your salary, and their decision to become a recruiter has nothing to do with a prior “failed career.”
Best advice is to find someone who has been doing it a long time (it’s commission based, so those who have been doing it a long time have to have a proven track record), and/or get a referral to one from someone you know who has experience with the particular recruiter.
A good recruiter will actually prep you for interviews and negotiate higher salaries for you. Since they have met with the hiring manager, they know how high they can actually pay.
The best recruiters ask specifically what you are interested in (analyst, accountant, internal controls etc) and find you that work. They should figure out how frequently you want to be in office, salary ranges, etc so that you don’t waste your time.
Look at their LinkedIn recommendations and see what kind of people they’ve placed and where
Yeah because sometimes a recruiter would ask my preferences and questions about what I’m looking for, but then they try to push me to apply to other offers I’m not interested in because it’s going to be tough for me to apply for what I want considering my profile and I definitely don’t like this mindset. But that’s just one reason from many. I guess I just need to continue to discuss with recruiters until I find one that’s really good and helpful.
A good recruiter is worth their weight in gold if you can find one. Problem is most aren't worth their weight in lint.
Honestly the one role I had a external recruiter reach out to me about I landed and took. Honestly it was a really bad firm :) haha maybe I should have seen that coming
The second role I had was an internal recruiter at the corporation. The role started out fine but was ultimately not what I wanted
Last and hopefully final move was me directly applying to the firm. Honestly , this so far has been a great fit. I really believe in the direction the firm is going.
In short, I have not had good luck with internal or external recruiters getting my foot in the door. I personally have had better luck with being referred by a friend and applying myself.
Great thing about being referred to a role by a friend that already works there is that they will be honest with you and a good resource going forward.
True ! I’ll try to rely on myself and my network and consider recruiters as last resort.
My experience with recruiters is horrible, they send you a couple jobs, and once they give your resume to the companies, if they aren’t interested in you BOOM recruiter ghosts you, no feedback no advice no other opportunities. You just aren’t worth their time if you aren’t going to make them money. I have found 1 recruiter that is gold and helps you with EVERY step and is in constant communication. I’ve known him for 3 years and have referred quite a few people to him that have been very happy. You just have to find that needle in the haystack that wants to fight with you and for you.
