Is it ok to be working on other tasks while you're in a meeting. I always thought it would be seen as rude, but I feel like I fall behind if I'm not doing this, and I imagine plenty of other people are doing it.

Nah, I try to multi task everyday. Try and fail.

like

Ya I do it too but it sucks when someone asks you a question and it’s clear you haven’t really been paying attention, happens to me all the time.

Much easier to do if it’s a camera off meeting where you’re not really talking.

like

Depends, used to have a manager who would clock me and tell me not to when I was a junior banker and that I should be taking call notes instead, really team dependent i’d say.

If possible you should always be paying attention to the meeting first and foremost. Workload and scheduling rarely allows this though so you gotta do what you gotta do. Just use your best judgment and prioritize accordingly

If you’re not paying attention/actively participating, do you need to be on it? Answer is usually no. If the answer is yes, question the yes.

I work at a ‘free market’ firm and have developed a very good reputation among partners. Naturally, they are drowning me in work. Each time a new case comes up, the partner will email asking if I have “time and interest” in helping. When I’m at capacity, I take these words at face value and explain why I can’t do it, and that seems to work out ok with no hard feelings. But what’s the “interest” thing? If I don’t want to work on a toxic tort case, do I just say that and pass?

I worked so hard to break into IB, put up all the hours and even working 2am nights for weeks, learned a ton, and improved a lot along the way as the sole analyst yet this happens. I’m extra worried because it doesn’t seem there’s IB analyst positions out there. Im really hoping come January more positions come up but I’m just praying they don’t fire me until then. Interesting all the noise about these PPT, my take:

The pandemic took all the upside of an IB analyst life (client meetings in person, fancy trips, suit up, worshiped at networking events) and left all the juniors with the downside (long hours, monkey-like type of job, aggressive work environment).

Not that the complaints are not sort of legitimate but you may need to revise the decision-making process that led you to accept a return offer. Specially if you were looking for less hours.

I can really use some direction. My background, I've worked 2 years in strategy and am currently coming off an exhausting year 2 in investment banking. I didn't particularly enjoy either role and am not interested in moving over to the buy-side or some monotonous FP&A role.
