I’ve made the move and I’m more like 40-45 and busier week of 50 each month for external deadlines.
It depends on what is going on that week. I’m a Tax manager right now in industry and understaffed helping with monthly close at beginning of month. The pay is better and hours are better, but it’s not a consistent 9-5. I Also am in charge of multi state sales and use tax process on top of income tax so that is due around 20th every month. My company keeps combining duties that would normally be spread across different specialty groups.
It is! There may be times when I work longer to meet a deadline but it’s doable and less stress. Also, I have better pay and benefits.
I think most of these answers - like all things is - it depends. I have been in industry where I worked 60 hours a week. I’ve worked 60 hours plus in big 4. I now work in big 4 and work no more than 40 hours a week. Maybe 45 or 50 if a Team member is out and I’m helping cover. Someone once told me, you can change positions but you can’t change you. It was when I was trying to get out big 4. But the partner told me if I was quit and got a job at bed bath and beyond, I’d be the first one there and last to leave. The metaphor was, you’ll overwork yourself anywhere if you’re prone to it. I’ve been in big 4 for quite some time now and am a senior manager with a great work life balance. But I had to learn to control myself. I had to set boundaries. Any job will take anything you’re willing to give. So give what is reasonable. Give your whole self when you working. Be as productive and efficient as you can. And then clock out at 5 and enjoy the rest of your life
Thanks, needed to see this

I work 8:30-4 everyday except for close. But even close is like 8:30-5. So not bad at all. We do have to work on a weekend every year end. But it’s one Saturday out of the whole year.
The grass is not always greener, but SA1 seems to have asked the right questions. I left PA for a Fortune 500 company and the hours were just as insane! Monthly close, quarterly, annual and long term forecasting and special projects all required crazy hours and ridiculous expectations. I boomeranged back to PA. At least I feel more respected in PA than I did in industry. Make sure you ask the right questions when interviewing! I wish I had.
Government auditor - 40 hour work weeks and I got away with only really working 2-4 hours a day.
Where I was, you had to start at around $50-55k, (not matter where you came from or how high up you were) then around 10% raise if promoted, with them happening every 1-2 years. Alot of people plateau though after 3-4 years.
100%
Following, would like to know
Not from a Jedi
Totally feasible- i left EY right after getting to S2 so it’s more than 10% pay raise. right now im working 8.30-5.30 every day (an hour lunch)
Definitely. If I have doctor/dentist appointments, i can just let the team know and make up for the time during lunch/other days
100% yes but it depends on the team. I’ve heard of F500’s with teams staffed by ex-B4 managers who still work 60 hour weeks on the regular.
I just got hired in industry for a better title and better salary, and when I told my manager (during my interview, in a polite way) that I’d quit if they expected me to work that much, she looked at me like I grew a third arm. The most she expects is *maybe* 50 hours but only if we’re swamped with month/year end work or our audit (mid-level role, with my experience in audit I might be asked to help). A normal 40 is expected, and any more than that means something is wrong or unusual.
It might take some leg work, and you might go through more than a few recruiters, but it’s totally worth it when you do find the right team. FWIW I could have had even fewer hours if I took a pay cut.
I think you need to completely cut accounting out of your next job cold turkey if you truly want a 9-5
I do 8:30-4:30 everyday pretty much. I worked once till 5:30 in my 3 months in this role.
What do you do?
I’ve never worked in industry but based on my experience with clients yes with the exception of close or other really busy deadlines where you might work more. It seems the majority of my clients all clear out at 5 most days.
Just exited to industry. 35-40 hour week. Indirect Tax. Really depends on your boss.
Depends. I worked a consistent 40-45 hour work week until budget season hit. Now it's 45-55 depending on the week.
Just transitioned into industry as well. Consistent 35-37 hour work week, never more. Way more flexibility. Way less stress
Y'all hiring?
It all boils down to staffing and complexity of the business
Yes! It’s absolutely possible! Also, I got at least 10-15% pay increase when I left PA.
