80 is a stretch (if you get on good projects it can be more like 55 if you include 1-3 hours on Sunday to get ready for the week). Definitely will be waaaay more hours than you’re working now in all likelihood. If you want to improve TC in tech try to exit to FAANG. Even if you become AP in a couple of years I’m not really convinced you’d uplevel quicker than by staying in tech.
Our comp trajectory will probably be stronger than your current company though.

Why would you go from Tech to McK to Tech?
Makes absolutely NO sense
Agreed and the time at McK is not worth it. It’s just a ton of work and burnout. Unless you’re looking for PE. Don’t go
EMs work 80 hour weeks? Sounds high. If so I would recommend taking another tech toke for a greater comp increase when it comes along.

Taking a pay cut to go there? No
That’s what I was also thinking. Thanks for reaffirming. It’s difficult to say no to such a big brand like McKinsey. But the product management market is also extremely overcrowded these days.
I actually moved to McK from tech background 2 years ago and now I feel it was a bad choice. Your technical growth is limited in the organization as compared to a pure play tech company. You will need to pick up McK toolkits like slide making , story telling etc. and work to build a network to grow in the firm. The effort in all these non technical tasks often do not excite a technical expert and this impacts your performance. And just for 15k hike, it is definitely a NO. McKinsey experience helps colleagues from MBA background
What if OP went to Accenture? Idk they seem like them are trying to bump titles.
Yes Accenture is a much better deal as there you get long term projects which involve deep technical implementation and project management skills. They will also give you exposure to client development. A technical expert is valued a lot in System Integration companies like Accenture
As said before: if you do not feel an itch to go into management consulting for anything else than the money, then don't!
I am your age and came to consulting from the industry because I was frustrated there: I know the upsides and downsides of both worlds and am happy with my choice. But if you are happy where you are and are not excited about the change, I believe the downsides in the new job will be more prominent for you and you might regret your change.
Also, it seems to me that you do not have a clear skill set in mind that you would like to acquire/develop in management consulting.
Do not do it just for the name on your CV!
What does your age have to do with anything? Take it if what you’re looking for is an exit out of tech. If that’s not what you want, it’s not worth a minimal pay increase and the 80+ hours you’ll be working each week.
