Is it worth learning CSS and HTML for UX design?

It really depends what direction you want to go in with your career. There are many ways to grow as a true UX designer, specializing in user research to understand human psychology and behavior, or collecting and analyzing data, identifying patterns through data mining and visualization. I believe that this is where the real money is at as a UX designer and big companies are willing to shell out a lot of money for an true expert who can turn data into profit.

I think that adding CSS3/SASS/SCSS and HTML5/JS can be valuable if youre interested in providing development support to teams who are looking to integrate your designs. If you choose to go this route, you might as well learn to implement your designs into React and Angular as well.

It really depends what direction you want to take your career in. Wish you the best!

Thanks so much for this great answer!!

I’d say yes if you want that understanding of what goes into making the designs you dream up turn into life. Just realize that when a designer codes, it is for a different purpose than what an actual software engineer codes for. I have coded some mockups simply because of limitations in Figma. It was actually easier to code the concepts than have to repeat the drag and drop processes for showing focus states on an Apple TV app that uses keyboard/gamepad like interactions.

Amazing thanks for this answer. Going to take the free 12 week course at the library. So happy to hear. I know basic html but CSS is new to me. Currently I only have 2 case studies and seems like I need more.

I think if you're in product/UX design, the more shared language you have with your developer partners, the better.

Good designers are good at understanding the roles and responsibilities of their clients and colleagues alike.

I have a coworker who is a talented designer and also a competent dev (unicorn, this guy). It's like a superpower for him. I think it would make you super marketable.

I started a company just under 1 year ago. We sell a product via ecom channels and have done ~100K in revenue with a 60% gross margin.

The first 6 months I was working a full time job. I quit my job to focus on the business full time, and have since depleted my readily available capital. I’m bootstrapping the business with my own funds. I was recently offered a job in my old industry for 80K per year. I was previously making 62K.

Should I take the job?

What’s your take on a job listing that states “From $xx,xxx”

The particular job I’m looking at has this on the listing and I’m curious as to what their budget actually is. Do I assume a range?

They’re seeking someone with 5-8 years experience. I have the latter (8 almost 9)

How would I approach this when asked without pricing myself out of the position? Especially if they’re not willing to be upfront (assuming here) how much they’d want to offer me in particular.

Is it normal for a Product Owner to lay out specs for how a feature should work?

I thought that was my job as the ux designer to figure out the best way to solve a need. But I’m getting handed projects where the PO, and sometimes the senior designer has laid out exactly what should happen (components used, flow, etc) to design a feature. It’s really frustrating because I don’t know if I’m supposed to be speaking up on what I think or just do the UI work I’m asked to.
