Grew up in NY. Lived many years in Chicago. Been 23 years in Texas, 15 in SA. I love it for families. People say schools aren’t the best but people say that about every place. Much of your child’s education has to do with where you send them to school and then with how you instill the value of rigor into their academics. Research supports the effect of rigor.
That’s not saying the Texas state or local government is amazing (drives me bonkers) but my day to day life doesn’t deal with it. My day to day is in a very diverse (more so than where I grew up, thanks to the military) neighborhood full of involved, educated, and interesting parents. We have a robust social life and we actually enjoy lots of outdoor activities year round— you just have to change your seasonal mindset a bit, prepare for the day differently, etc.
The local culture is interesting and alive and people revel in showcasing it. There is SO much more to do and see than the Riverwalk and Pearl. And one of my favorite things is how family friendly everything is. I thoroughly enjoy taking my kids to Spurs games and not worrying about people swearing or acting foolish. It is a tight knit city that still has values.
Yes it has problems, but it also has people— of all ages, races, and beliefs— who care about the city. And that makes a great city to me.
Our education system is poor.
Our city council is corrupt.
And there has been some rumors about the chief of police.

Curious:: Why do you say that about our educations system
Been here for 20+ years.
This city is very diverse, and has many different areas that are all very different.
Depending on where in SA, there are great places to live, work and have/raise a family.
I disagree with the corrption comment, and we have a hell of a lot of disparity in public Ed, but have many excellent public school options and charters and privates.
Moved here about two years ago from the east coast. It’s fine. We have a nice house that isn’t THAT cheap. Summers are too hot to play with kids outside, but there are a lot of indoor places for kids throughout the year. The culture is very cool and it’s unlike any other city in the country. On the flip side, Its a sleepy town other than the Riverwalk and the Pearl, but if you’re with a family, maybe that doesn’t matter. Airport is small relatively. Solid 5/10.
Where did you come from in the east coast?
Born and Raised, I have always planned on living somewhere else and then coming back when it’s time to start a family and buy a house. I have a big family here and I truly think that it’s the people that make the city not the other way around. All big cities have similar amenities, but happiness comes down to where you have the strongest connection with the people. Oh and if you do move here, convert to being a spurs fan
