Therapy is effective. A therapist does more than just "listen" to you. They ask very useful follow up questions and insightful assignments. They also give you coping mechanisms. I am so grateful for my therapist. She was helpful and not judgmental.
A good therapist does more than just listen, they identify thought patterns and challenge them to help you readjust your mode of thinking about certain issues and situations. Key here is to find a good therapist, which unfortunately is harder than it should be

Oh wow, yeah that is just the impression of therapy you get from movies. Therapy has been among the best decisions I’ve made. It’s helped me understand who I am, why and helped me change things about myself that I was discontent with. I understand my friends and family better, have left unhealthy relationships. And I set better boundaries with work and others. The list goes on.

I found therapy to be super helpful when i was growing up and would definitely do it again. It eventually helps train you to be more aware of your recurring thought patterns/ coping mechanisms/ motivations/ etc. You start being able to recognize your own patterns and challenge your own assumptions. It increases your self awareness and allows you to make changes in your thinking and behavior.

It’s also a lot to put on your friends and family to expect them to just have a 1-2 hour session to talk about you and your issues, and they’re not a professional. Will probably be better for all those relationships when you can stop putting that weight on them as much.

Therapy was incredible for me during a super traumatic event in my life. I was suicidal and having an emotional breakdown and was super out of touch with my emotions. For example, I’d find myself having a full blown panic attack/meltdown and be unable to express why or how I was feeling. My therapist was amazing. We didn’t just talk. We discussed how I got to where I was, how to recognize and feel emotions, how to process difficult trauma, how to manage stress, how to set boundaries, how to ask for help, how to restructure my life to avoid re-traumatizing myself, etc. It’s just like talking to a family member or friend except if they had a degree in how to help you resolve your problems.
Absolutely, just takes some time to find the right person. I was super ego driven and refused to go to therapy for the longest time but I can truly honestly say that it saved my life. Zero exaggeration I would not be here today without it.
Therapy is dope. Wouldn't be here today without it. Personally believe everyone should try it at some point in their life, if for nothing more than to get a sounding board for a major decision/issue in your life and hopefully get some insight into yourself as a result of it.
Takes time/doesn't happen all at once, but like anything investing in it and putting in the work pays dividends.
Fwiw there are quite a few therapists (in NY at least) who are former.attorneys (mostly ex-big law). Found my current therapist in 5min on Google, best one I've ever had.
I can’t say more positive things about therapy. Saved my career and relationship and my sanity lol. Happy to pass along the contact info if you want a recommendation!

I have yet to find any therapist worthwhile at all. Been trying for a long time.

Recommendations from friends are best. It can be like dating which is exhausting.
