FAANG is a made up term by Jim Cramer. At the time Microsoft was not doing well
It’s supposed to be FANGULTAD: FANG + Uber, LinkedIn, Two Sigma, Apple, Dropbox
Sounds like a Viking maiden
Can't comment on the hierarchy and pay of FAANGs. As to why not Microsoft:
"The term [FAANG] was coined by Jim Cramer, the television host of CNBC's Mad Money, in 2013, who praised these companies for being “totally dominant in their markets”. Originally, the term FANG was used, with Apple—the second “A” in the acronym—added in 2017."
It's 2020. Why not update it, lol.
Someone literally asked this recently. Netflix pays all cash and gives big offers. Amazon’s has a bad vesting cliff, but makes up with a signing bonus for the first two years. Apple’s comp has been inflated recently with stock appreciation and G/F give good offers with good vesting schedule. All these employers including Microsoft have well documented pros and cons. Even within companies your experience might vary based on team.
FAANG was coined to group high growth stocks a few years ago. Considering recent growth of Tesla and other companies it might not be a relevant classification as it once was.
Rising Star
Thanks where did you get that info
I’ve heard this ranking for comp, actual FAANGers pls fix if I’m super off
Netflix>>>FB>Google>Amazon>Apple>Microsoft
My Apple offer was 1.5x my Google offer after negotiation with both companies, but less than Google pre-negotiation
M is much more similar to the others than Netflix which is more of a Hollywood company every day. No real hierarchy between them as it depends so much on the role, level and department
Netflix is actually trying to rebrand themselves not to be seen as a tech company but an entertainment company, with the growth in the original content space. The acronym FAANG has merely become a representation of tech companies in general. So all the Teslas, MSTF etc are included just silent
In terms of comp and interview difficulty:
F=N>G>Apple>Amazon>Microsoft
Source: I’m a FAANGer
Soo where does Twitter fall in thus
Pro
I don’t think the comp at Microsoft is that high compared to the other fangs
Is there a prestige difference that goes along with the differences in comp? Should I prefer a lower paying job at Google over a higher paying one at Apple in terms of career growth?
