I’ve been a pharmacist for 6 years, but the work is stressful and the salary cap is very low for the work. Is it practical for me to break into consulting? Because of my student loans, it’s not practical for me to take a huge pay cut (currently $130k). I heard getting a PMP may help me break in. Any advice?

How are you a pharmacist at EY?

This post is from my sister. She wanted to just use my account.

Pharmacist making less money than consulting!! This is the first time I heard!! Yes sure, if you want to work 16-18hrs a day where the salary cap looks great, consulting is the gig for you.

For everyone talking about how they don't get how pharmacists make less:

It's true. I considered both. The upside in consulting, especially considering the time/cash spent on school, is way better.

By the time you finish pharm school, a big 4 consultant would be making the same base salary, likely with higher TC including bonus. And yet B4 consultants would still have more room to grow.

Pharmacists get stuck at their salary and their base rises slowly with YOE. Very little professional or comp growth. And it's getting even worse because there's a huge oversupply of pharmacists. It's the new law school.

like

It's not at all common though for pharmacists to move up further than the individual contributor role
That's how a lot of medical jobs work - you're pigeonholed by your degree for life, aside from rare leadership roles. Way more common in consulting especially if you consider exit ops over the long term.
I'm not including consulting partner in my calculation as that's not realistic. More thinking about M as the cap, as well as exit ops in the broader business world.

We have pharmacists at Mercer, what kind of pharmacy work do you do?

like

Also a pharmacist, feel free to DM me, you’ll not take a huge pay cut at most firms

Wow it’s good to see fellow grads from Rutgers on here!

Not sure people go into consulting when they want less stress. What is it about being a pharmacist you don’t like? I’ve heard retail is tough but balance is better in a hospital (sis is a pharmacist and avoided going into retail)

Looking at my sister’s experience (she’s the OP), it’s definitely less stressful. Her work is tracked by the minute, and there is a lot more at stake given she’s dealing with lives during emergency.

She also worked in a hospital setting.

You’ll most likely take a paycut for a few years. Could also go back and do a MBA to shoot for strategy roles.

What’s the cap for pharmacy

OP and brother - I think you guys are really underestimating the stress of consulting. Yes pharmacy is definitely a stressful field but consulting is also very stressful in it’s own way. I am not sure the trade off is worth it if you are looking to change fields because of stress. The hours are long in both. Granted, in consulting you get to sit in a chair for most of those hours.

If your goal is to make more money, yes I believe consulting has the higher growth potential. Pharmacy is a bit of a saturated field so the pay has leveled out. There’s a lot more pharmacist out there then you’d believe and not enough demand for them.

Also, related to the ending of your post, PMP would be a great cert to obtain, however you wouldn’t be eligible to sit for that exam quite yet. You must have many hours of project management experience to sit for the exam.
