I’m also in a similar situation from independent, retail. and specialty looking for a opportunity that does not plateau. I’ve consider pharma and pharmacy informatic roles
Informatics now requires residency, no hospital will hire a retail pharmacist for this position
Plateauing I feel like is super normal in our industry. You're for sure not alone; I was going through this too. Relocation might help your upward mobility
Thank you for sharing the sentiment. That's why I'm asking on here for non-traditional roles or other ideas.
Was relocating what you needed to do? Due to family, moving is a difficult option so I'm looking for some other options 🙂
There are also opportunities for pharmacists to work as consultants, either independently or for consulting firms. Maybe you could consider advising healthcare organizations on drug utilization, pharmacy operations, or drug safety.
How?
Pharmacogenomics and precision medicine are rapidly evolving areas. More colleges of pharmacy are offering online graduate degree or certificate programs for those interested in blazing trails into this emerging field.
What kind of jobs would you apply for with that kind of knowledge
I've seen some of my pharmacy colleagues transition into pharmaceutical sales or medical science liaison roles. Good be a good route depending on what you like!
Yea pharma is on the list of things I'm considering. MSLs make $140-180k or so. I'm just not a fan of the constant travel
Have you considered looking into consulting or health technology roles?
I don't know much about consulting and what you can do with it. Health tech is on the list of things I'm considering. My one complaint about it from what I've seen so far is I'll have to take a significant pay cut starting out ($80k-100k), but it may be worth it in the long run because they can pay well.
Never know the future; I feel like 15 years ago it would be so hard to see life as it is right now. But this is where my education lies so I stick to the grind.
I agree we don't know what 15 years will hold for us, but I am trying to ask if people know of a career path(s) that could give people options for a 15 year plan. A dead end job wouldn't even give you the chance to see that far.
