I’ve been applying to brand side gigs and I almost always get a rejection despite having tons of great agency experience. Any advice for making my resume work for in house instead of agency?

Pepper your resume with more marketing jargon like “go-to-market”, “conversion,” “full funnel, “measurable results,” “impact,” etc, and before you know it, you’ll be seen as exactly the type of useless minion that will “thrive in a fast-paced environment” dedicated to building irrelevant deckware “at the speed of innovation.”

Let’s go!

I don't know if you do this but if you say “the client”or center the client in your comms reframe your thinking since YOU are the client.

I recently made the transition from agency to brand - feel free to message me! Without knowing the industries you’ve worked on, would say it’s usually helpful to have a good amount of experience in a similar industry to the brands you’re applying for. I think it was also helpful for me to have a lot of experience across channels but also being able to speak to strategy and my specific role driving projects. Agency side were so used to saying what the ‘team’ did but they want to know specifically what your role was

Thank you! This is really helpful!

The good news is client side always wants agency experience. But as you know the white collar job market is having a moment in general. Part of that is over reliance on ATS systems to parse resumes. So just Google or Reddit how to ats-proof your resume if you haven’t (e.g. less “design-y” formats if you are a creative, word docs are more ats-friendly). Outside of that using ChatGPT to feed your resume and the job description so it can help you write a more targeted cover letter. And finally networking your way in (via 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon) will always trump ats.

ATS is the worst but I guess I have to take it into consideration

take it with a grain of salt but in my experience agency work usually has a very corny awfully over done central idea and over done design details. brand work typically leans simple, thoughtful and doesn’t need so many awful metaphors and halllmarks. it’s a confidence that agency work lacks. so it may not be a great fit if your ad work feels super promotional or forced

funny

was meant to help by considering giving context to what type of work you’d want to put forward as examples etc. to get in brand side - and was trying to offer kind advice from someone who’s been on both sides - as to what work may be a turn off for them - i do see how it may have been lost in translation, for that i do apologize. hope that it does now actually of some kind of help!

I was on the agency side for 8 years and transitioned over to the brand side (pharma/biotech). After 4 years on this side, I’ve been unable to find my next role after an acquisition. I’ve had a few interviews, but the market seems to be flooded with qualified candidates from the industry side. It will probably be pretty difficult to move over to the brand side right now due to the competition for the roles. I’m hoping more roles open up once bonuses are paid out in the next month or so.

There is some great advice here for agency creatives who are looking to make the transition to in-house is to take a job description for an in-house role and use AI to align your resume to the job description. The language in-house uses is different from agency side so you want your resume to match that. Also look for an in-house position that matches the work you did in the agency world. For example if you worked on CPG, look at in-house teams at CPG companies. Brands want people who have industry knowledge.

I just finished what I thought was the final round of interviews for a job that I really want. Everything has been going extremely well. The recruiter just called to tell me that they want me to do one more round, though. This will make 8 interviews total, including a full case study presentation to 4 people. Should I be worried? Is this a red flag?

Any tips on how to deal with this…my entire team was let go today (was 5, now just me). We functioned as the Marketing team for 4 brands and primarily focused on product launches and sustaining social media content. My plan moving forward is to only focus on the top revenue driving product launches for now and say “no” to basically everything else. Would love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation and can offer some advice.
