That’s such a tricky limbo to be in—on one hand, verbal commitments can be a sign of trust and investment from leadership, but on the other hand, they’re not exactly bankable. I’ve seen people wait years for a promised title change that never materialized. Personally, I’d weigh two things: (1) What are you learning right now that adds value to your dream role, and (2) Do you trust this commitment enough to stay even if it took longer than 2 years? A soft exit strategy might also help—keep your eyes open while still giving your current team a fair shot.
What do they expect you to have in 2 years that you do not have right now? I'd be wary of promises like that one, they can't promise you'll have what it takes to take the role in 2 years, and 2 years is long enough to have at least 1 re-org in it and layoffs, it could be that the person promising it is not even around anymore. Try and deliver at the level that is expected to take on your dream role right now, look for other opportunities in the meantime that offer the same (in 2 years I can see that happening to be honest) and worst case scenario you'll have what you've been promised 2 years from now but at least you did everything you could to make sure that you haven't lost the opportunity for that verbal commitment. Hope this helps!

Same — the future is now! It's important to not wait around for change, in a lot of parts of life!
The carrot trick, dont be surprise if you get disappointed in two years, its like promising your kids ice cream if they clean their rooms, some times they get ice cream some times you just want them to clean their rooms and do their jobs

100% I agree. In the end of the day you have to do whats best for you and your career and in a weird way, trust no one
