I think the director title is lower than VP in some PE portcos from what I’ve seen. More like an associate/senior associate role?
What are your LT goals?
If most of your time at Big 4 was on public companies, I doubt you’ll have a hard time getting back into public companies.
It’s a simple math question. You will consider the reduced compensation as an investment. Then compute what the payoff will be when your compensation exceeds the trajectory you have with your current job. A simple “time value of money” analysis.
It’s a similar calculus if you go back to school for a masters degree, even if you are going part time. I did that in my 40s and even with significant employer reimbursement, if I could do it again, I would not.
From a broader perspective, just remember as you get closer and closer to retirement age this type of career shift gets harder and harder to do because you have fewer years for the payoff phase.
