I’ve been with my company for 18 months, and my title and pay is definitely inflated relative to my responsibilities. I’m looking to leave my company to get the experience I believe I need to continue climbing the corporate ladder (currently working as a “director” in a PE-owned company but want to get back into the public company world). Am I crazy to leave, potentially taking a hit to total comp, for presumably more responsibility and work but hopefully more alignment with LT goals?

Can you Ask for more responsibilities and projects in your current role. What does your leadership do that you want to do? Ask to be involved.

SA1 and EY1 are definitely NOT in the know! 😌

I think the director title is lower than VP in some PE portcos from what I’ve seen. More like an associate/senior associate role?

It’s a simple math question. You will consider the reduced compensation as an investment. Then compute what the payoff will be when your compensation exceeds the trajectory you have with your current job. A simple “time value of money” analysis.

It’s a similar calculus if you go back to school for a masters degree, even if you are going part time. I did that in my 40s and even with significant employer reimbursement, if I could do it again, I would not.

From a broader perspective, just remember as you get closer and closer to retirement age this type of career shift gets harder and harder to do because you have fewer years for the payoff phase.

Why do you think your title and responsibilities are inflated, what are you actually doing?

Completely get it, its mainly the not having direct reports thats holding you back

like

You should be more proactive, asking for a higher level role and responsibilities.

Does anyone know if this is normal? I joined a vault 100 firm in September last year. The firm put me on tier 7. In January I had the associate review and everything was normal. After a couple of weeks, I got the call from the hiring partner telling my bonus and new salary (because of the firm-wide salary increase). I realized I still get paid as a 7 year associate. The partner said because I joined the firm later in the year, it’s normal not to advance in the next year. Is it? Thanks!
