Nice... though NYC-LHR business fares are already very competitive compared to business fares to other cities. Live in a smaller city and going anywhere int’l in business is like $8k minimum. 😑 first world problems I know...
Who did they buy LHR slots from? LHR is sold out and has been for a long time
To be clear, it’s not confirmed that they got LHR slots. London is 99%, but not LHR. We will have to wait and see
Just read the articles. LHR isn’t confirmed and also looks like they’re looking at Amsterdam as well
Until LHR builds its third runway some decade in the future, slots with competitive times for US service will continue to command a significant premium. For instance, in 2015 AA bought a slot pair from SAS for $60 million. So even acquiring enough slots to run a small operation there could cost a quarter billion or more, if you can even get others to part with them. Gatwick is the usual backup plan from the US but it too still only has its single runway. I’d like to see Stansted given more of a try from the US, and it does have rail service to Liverpool Street Station.
Even if JetBlue gets slots, and converts some of its Airbus A321neo orders to the long range version to be able to reliably operate the 3,451 mile JFK-LHR route, I suspect they’ll compete more on service than price. Even with the more efficient aircraft, narrowbodies really don’t haul cargo across oceans in addition to passengers, and they’ll have an expensive sunk cost to recover if they go into Heathrow. That said, the more competition for the US Big 3, plus BA’s lack of motivation to upgrade their business class product and service, could be helpful for business travelers flying classes above coach.
BAs business class with the fold down foot rest is terrible
Sweet.
This Wednesday? Or on Wednesday, April 10th?
Jetblue suckkkkkks
Wonder how much the tickets will sell for. Surprised they got LHR and not LGW as well
My bet is on Stansted if this happens at all
This is why BA 1 and 2 use the A318
Any guesses on what the fare will be for mint?
Plus the UK Air Passenger Duty (APD), which apparently rises again on April 1 to £172 (US$227 at current conversion rates) for departures from the UK in long haul premium cabins. After that and other taxes, JetBlue can try to recover their variable and fixed costs in their fares and try to find margin :-) and of course smaller jets make it harder to recover fixed costs from, as there are fewer passengers to allocate them across.
My guess is that while they’ll probably have some introductory deals, the only way to not lose a ton of money on this will be to compete on better service at a price point at or slightly below the competition.
