SMs-if I email you something you asked me to do as a favor, please have a courtesy to at least reply.Even a single word "Thanks" will work and will not take more than 30s of your highly billable time
I’ll be short of RSM’s billable hours goal of 1600 by around 300 hours by the end of fiscal year end. How fucked am I?
Anyone else completely mail it in after giving their 2 weeks? Major senioritis for me rn. Probably had 2 billable hours today. Maybe
Is working while dreaming considered billable hours?
What happens if you don’t hit your billable hours? I am a first-year that had a very slow February and slow start to March. I’ve been reaching out to various teams for work but things seem slow now & I’m worried that I’m not going to hit my 1800 target.
This year has been insane. 200+ hours every month. July has been really been slow though. I’m at like 35 billable hours this month. I’m a first year in transactional and staffed on deals that haven’t picked up yet. I’m hesitant to reach out for work because I don’t want to be overwhelmed ... but I also am getting anxiety because I literally have nothing to do all day. Anyone else in this boat?
Non-political poll - how many non-billable hours have you logged so far this year? I’ll start: 143
Frustrated with work as we all are. Single mom insurance defense litigation for mid sized NYC based firm. Base salary is 136k nominal bonuses. Struggling to meet work demands (deadlines, billable hours) and then also struggling financially. Just curious if what I am making is going rate, am of counsel after taking 6 years off of practice 10+ years practicing. Thanks!
If you're a company who employs alot of hourly workers for your billable hours at the client side, Which ATS and HRIS you all use?
I'm told I need to give more billable work to a new paralegal. This reduces my billable hours, which have recently started to slow down. I have no financial incentive to do so as I do not receive a portion of her billed work..Is it a common practice for an associate attorney to receive a portion of their paralegals billed work?
Have a call on Friday with the CEO of an environmental entrepreneurship non-profit. It could lead to a professional opportunity and maybe even billable work I can refer to my firm down the line. I’m going in with an open mind but little concrete information on his entity and goals and ways I could get involved. What questions would you ask such a person?
The ebbs and flows of a junior associate (<1yr)... I was approached by my managing parter today about my billable hours. I make an honest effort to bill 40 hours a week and average 37-40 hrs. I learned today that many of these hours are written off by partners and my realized hours are only 30-ish. Now I'm expecting to bill at least 50 hours a week to make up for that deficit. I don't understand why so much time is not realized. Has anyone else had this problem?
How are firms handling the economic downturn in terms of billable hour requirements for associates? Are annual billable requirements being updated or mitigated in any way? Curious to see how other firms are handling this issue, and also afraid of not being able to take any time off until 2021 😳
Have a counselee and utilization is below target ~5%. She was told reduce billable hours for a month which is obv when looking at time report. Ok to mention this as explanation during Y/E? (Cont)
What’s the best thing for a new associate to do to get on billable work? I was mapped to an industry I have no experience in; how do I start gaining experience when I don’t have the experience to get on these projects?
If you are an associate assisting on a file, you get cc’d on all emails and take time to read them and stay up to date, however you aren’t actually replying to the emails or doing any billable work. But you need to stay in the loop for when you need to eventually draft a document and know the facts. How do you record your time for these emails?
What careers/practice areas in law do not require billable hours (other than plaintiff’s firms)?
What are the expected billable hours/revenue/analytical requirements for staff at your firm?
Just need to rant: super annoyed with the whole “utilization and billable hours.” We have FTO, which I love but the utilization takes away from it. For 2 weeks I barely was able to make 30 hours, which is awesome because I wasn’t stressed. But my utilization has now dropped, so I have to work extra to “make it up” if I want to take vacations and actually use the holidays the firm has given. GT has like 11 days off for for the holidays/NYE and I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to take that
Received an offer at an insurance defense firm for $75K. 2K billable hours requirement with bonuses for going above. Is this offer any good? And should I attempt to negotiate? Any help would be appreciated!

Inspired by the q of what firms are doing right, what are firms doing right for first year associates? Midsized firm, fall 2020 start class delayed to Jan 2021 but some started Nov 2020 to help the business group. Covid meant no "welcome to the firm" happy hour, but I think some got a wine gift box and some got nothing. New fall class just started so I hear the fall 2020/Jan 2021 class is feeling salty/forgotten. What have firms done for first years/ideas to make covid class feel welcome?

Got an offer from a T2 at 1 level before the Post-MBA level. Current firm offered to match base comp with guaranteed promo to Post-MBA level. Benefits of staying would be the established network and higher rank but T2 has higher comp progression. T2 post-MBA comp would be ~50% higher in 1.5 to 2 years. Should I take the promo or leave to chase the higher potential compensation? Intend to leave consulting in 3 years. Career levels are BA > SBA > Assoc (post-MBA level) > Manager
