Just verbally accepted an offer to become the newest partner at a much bigger firm in town after 5+ years slaving for a smaller firm that told me they would only “let” me be of counsel (and pay rent equal to my current salary) or stay an associate. So long, late nights with no bonuses! Adios, screaming phone calls out of the blue! WOOOOO!!!!!!!!

About 3 weeks ago I became part of the leadership team that was told confidentially that layoffs are coming - specifically to my team. Then a week later, my manager started acting funny. Finally he told me I’m also on that (long) layoff list. So I’m in this crazy position of knowing most of my team is getting laid off - and me with them. But it’s not been announced. It’s been a strain. I’m spinning - in part bc I know what’s coming, but can’t tell my team. Is there anything I can do?

HELP! I’ve been contacted by a small private security firm who wants me to be their “on call” counsel. They describe it as a lot of contract review, drafting NDAs, etc. but also being there if/when they need to license a vehicle, defend civil suit, etc. It’s overwhelming but sounds like a really great opportunity. I have enough background to be comfortable with contracts and litigation, but don’t want to get myself into a mess. Has anybody else ever had a job like this?

I'm a 1st year @ a civil lit defense firm. I summered here and got the "our firm culture is amazing, we want to grow and help you learn" pitch and accepted the offer of $75k, thinking that was what most other associates make (I'm 1st gen). But today I found out that associates with 4yrs experience are making $80k; for hitting the 1950 billable req., the bonus is $1k. I've also found there are big DEI problems that I can't overlook. It feels like the pitch was a big lie. Advice?

How does everyone handle managing their caseload and utilizing their paralegal(s)? I litigate primarily, with occasional small transactional projects that come up in the course of those files. It’s usually real estate related—drafting a purchase agreement, deed, etc. My firm is not one where we specialize so much that each case has the same process as every other case.
