For me it has been a gradual change over time. When I joined (3 years ago) cases were well scoped and hours were actively respected. You’d know when a bad few days or weeks were coming. If you worked late and got your work done before the rest of the team, you’d want to offer to help so they can call it a day too. Now that working late has become the norm, that team spirit is being used to mask toxic culture. It honestly feels strange to me that at other firms people will log off without checking in on the team but maybe we’ve just been brainwashed to think that

I do this currently and was low key hoping it would lead to me getting fired (trying to find another job but market has been brutal) and instead of getting fired I got an exceeds expectation during this review cycle. Now granted I’m just eating dinner whenever I want, I am not able to step away for multiple hours and do things like exercise, but I can disappear without permission everyday for about an hour
