Lately I’ve noticed how “small asks” stack up in ways that are overwhelming. A quick review here, a short client note there, mentoring a junior, prepping slides for a partner. It all sounds minor in isolation. But by the end of the week, I’m staring at a mountain of “five-minute tasks” that eat entire evenings. It’s not the big projects that kill me, it’s death by a thousand cuts. How do you stop the snowball effect before it buries you?

My practice is built on small tasks. The key to success isn’t saying no. Instead my keys are: 1) identify the relationships and matters that are most important to your development and consistently prioritize them. When your work involves a bunch of smaller matters it’s easy to default to answering the loudest voice in the room instead of the one that matters most; 2) switch tasks efficiently—don’t take breaks when switching from one matter to another. Getting rid of social media and other similar distractors may help with this; 3) make space for yourself. When your practice involves a bunch of smaller matters you never feel like your work is done. Make things that personally matter to you non-negotiable (eg I would rather miss an arbitrary deadline than skip a workout or lose a couple hours of sleep)

Learn how to say no.

Saying NO is the key. Hard to do though in practice.

When asked to do a new project, give the timeframe when you expect to turn to it and maybe a brief overview of what’s already on your plate. Eg, “happy to help but I’m working on XYZ due Thursday morning and can start this on Thursday afternoon. Does that work?” That may give you a bit more time/a deadline that works for you and also builds goodwill because they see you’re busy but also willing to help (eventually).

Yes. These sound like things to delegate. Put your project management skills to practice. Supervise the paralegal or assistant to help you while you’re working on actual work to be done by an attorney and working closely with your clients.

Also, I have an idea of what I should be compensated in this type of role, but any insights on how they pay compared to others would be helpful. Are you traveling during the pandemic or have client interactions been virtual? Lastly, if you are a consultant here, are you on billable hours? My current consulting role is not - so this would be new.

It's super frustrating to be "time poor".

That's seemingly just the nature of working in Biglaw.

But every day you have the option to buy back your time.

How do you buy back time?

It's simple—by saving and investing.

And you don't need to be uber wealthy to regain control of your time.
