While I'm not in recruitment, I find it hard to believe that someone would overlook a solid resume simply because they don't have a PMP.
Maybe your resume could be reworded so it's painting your experience through more of a PM lens? If you look at what we're responsible for: Scope, Resources, Plan, Quality, Issues, Risks, could you rewrite your experience and contributions with these things in mind (using these terms and other project terms also wouldn't hurt).
Keep applying. I got 30 No’s before I got my one YES! Determination will be the determining factor.
The only thing that you need to qualify for the exam is $$$ and be able-bodied.
I hate to say this - I’m the one that just posted about looking to leave PM as it isn’t a job where you can be disabled. (Hey, I don’t want to be disabled either! But a selfish truck driver & the limits of medical science made those calls, not me).
One reason I’m not crazy about PM is that many of the jobs seem to be contract. That was largely not a good experience either - the doctor who was scheduled to do the surgery that would’ve restored full use of my right arm, cancelled it and changed his medical opinion when he learned I was just a contract employee. (Told me to get an FTE role & “earn” the right to that surgery. I got an FTE role & a new doctor 4 years ago, a couple months after that conversation… I’m still waiting.)
But if you are desperate, have savings and a spouse who earns a steady income that could cover you both, and the company has a good reputation, you could try contract.
Or if your boss is cool, talk to them & say you’re interested in taking on more PM type duties in your current role. Like paying utility bills, nobody likes PMs conceptually but shit falls apart without us.
Not sure how to check DMs but if you can send me one & I can find it, happy to give you resume pointers.
I wish you all the best!
Me again. I forgot to say no job function is perfect.
I’d do like “informational interviews” with PMs in your network on what it’s really like and how to shift.
