I agree with your recruiter about Gordon & Rees—it’s likely to be more EPLI work (insurance), so the rates are lower and the firm is seen as less “prestigious.” With your background, you’ll likely get some bites from BigLaw L&E groups if you wait long enough. I made the switch myself from general lit to L&E at the end of my second year. However, be aware that some NYC BigLaw groups are likely to do more corporate L&E work rather than all litigation and counseling. If you’re willing to take a pay cut, then look at Ogletree, Littler, and Fisher & Phillips, as well as Jackson Lewis as mentioned. Other firms to look at would be Morgan Lewis, Jones Day, and Seyfarth.
Preach.
Are you applying to the job postings or getting help from a recruiter? For litigation, I’ve enjoyed working with litigators who take litigation skills and turn into employment specialists. You need to talk to someone in recruiting because grades, litigation experience, etc. can definitely get you into a partnership track at the right AmLaw100 firm.
EPL work can be great experience. However, it’s important to have a mix otherwise the rates are low and it’s not very profitable.
Thank you for all the reactions! So glad I posted this!
