Moved from Houston to the midwest (not Chicago...def not a major market in a mid city) about 2 yrs ago for an IHC gig. Have since moved to a remote role at a different company. I absolutely hate it here but spouse's parents live nearby. However, there is Nothing to do. Restaurants suck. It's actually more expensive where we live than Houston + state tax. Weather is just miserably cold 6 months out of the year. Spouse is remote as well. Talk me out of trying to convince her to move to Dallas...

Sounds like a personal discussion between you and your spouse. Are you scared of bringing it up to them? Because I don't think you'll get anywhere asking a bunch of randos on a job board.

...or somewhere else where it isn't nearly as cold. I miss being able to walk outside in winter or play golf. It gets just as hot here in the summer than it did in Houston, so I just don't see the point other than family proximity. They live near a major airport so would be totally fine flying to them a handful of times per year.

Agree that it’s gotta be between you and your spouse. I don’t blame you though.

I had a similar conversation with my wife this weekend - part of my annual review is answering whether I’d be open to relocating to another office and my company has offices across the EU, MENA, and Asia.

My wife said absolutely not. She likes where we live and wouldn’t want to move. I even suggested what about Switzerland or the UK/Ireland or Italy and she said no. Worth asking but it’s gotta be a spousal decision.

Fire you boss, divorce your spouse and you will be FREE!
I am not serious ^_^

Thanks, all. Yes, agree on discussing with my spouse more in depth. She likes it here but knows I do not. She's very close with her fam so curious how others handled this sort of situation (which I know is going down the psych/counseling approach). Assume others have relo'd with a working spouse.

Our lease is up in 14 months so we do have quite a bit of run way before we would decide either way. My big issue is the cost of living. We're paying state tax and highish cost of living in a location that we can't go outside for half the year...it's maddening.

Apparently it’s not working for you, bro

What city? I’m curious lol

I was just talking to a younger friend who goes to Cal and It seems like the kids these days hate FAANG or at least Amazon and Facebook are not desired at all. I personally don’t see too many issues working at either Amazon or Facebook because I work at Deloitte where I’m sure we have many questionable clients and worked in financial services before. Curious on whether people are thinking about the ethics of their exit company when deciding to move?

Hey Partners! I accepted a position at another firm and was bumped from manager to Senior consultant level. Could you give me some advice on 3 key things I can focus on to help me re-advance quickly?

like

I have been at my company for 3.5 years. One year ago (2.5 years into my employment with them) they re-leveled everyone and I was bumped to an entry level position on the terms that they changed my job title when they re-leveled, so “technically” I am at the early stages of my new title. Even though the job duties did not really change.
I’m not sure the best way to approach this. Has anyone else had a similar experience or know how I should advocate for myself?

7 year lawyer here. Been with the same big national firm all 7 years (not BigLaw) doing complex litigation. Been working remote a long time due to moving around for wife’s job. As a result of the moving was bumped off partner track. I’m looking at a great small firm that will be a practice change (but still litigation). I’m told they’re looking for someone with less experience and they’re skeptical because of my experience. It’s frustrating. How do I overcome this?

Offering advice to job seekers who go around recruiters and message hiring teams, execs, etc. You are putting the Recruiters job in danger. If a Recruiter declines you or doesn’t choose to reach out, it is because the hiring team declined you, or you don’t have the experience. You will most likely not be considered for future roles because of this. When I see people giving advice to reach outside the Recruiter, it’s bad advice. Very rare is this a good idea.

This place is not good for me mentally and I’ve only been here for 90 days. I should’ve listened to my gut but here we are. So my question is what job titles should I be targeting as a senior project manager if I want to go to to client side?

Let’s say you were interviewing for a global client lead role - at the holding co level - for one of WPP, Omnicom or IPG.

What questions would you ask in the interview phase?
What concerns would you have?
If you had your pick of essentially the same role at all three of those holding companies which would you pick? Or not pick?

If you have any insight/two cents you up for sharing to help me out, thank you!

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Anyone going to the security/privacy conference in DC this week?

Outside counsel has been prepping company witnesses for a trial in August. It is my subject area so I am supervising outside counsel. I did not, however, choose the counsel. He is doing a really awful job. Co counsel is better, but not great either. Higher ups love the firm… I do not want to micromanage, but I have genuine concerns about outside counsel’s ability to try this case. Trials are rare, and I just don’t think these guys have actually tried many cases. Cont. below…
