No, it’s fine…. The old regime has this mentality of needing to be together, but we have more than proven working from home is way more efficient.
Your CEO goes to work to be seen, and to see their employees working (because they likely don’t trust you to work without their watchful eye).
They go to work to be catered to, and made to feel important. To have their lunch order taken. And that emergency call pop up (which they thrive on).
They’re the modern day king/queen stepping out on their balcony just to hear the peons to cheer.
The people who find their way to the corner office are also the same people that want to be in a busy office buzzing with energy. They don’t get that not everybody feels that way.
Guess it must be nice when you're the head of a department or discipline, having benefited from years of in-person mentorship, coaching, and learning to now say "I'm never going back".
So if that's your stance, what are you going to do to help all your teammates who never had all the learning opportunities you took for granted? Oh I'm sure that next IPG zoom webinar on how to manage should take care of it all, right...
You have a point as I’m sure it’s not the same for everyone but personally I am able to make the time and can control my agenda a lot more meticulously whilst at home than I could before. My team gets triple my attention now.
I know this doesn’t help everyone, but is there a way to talk to them about employee needs and exemptions? For example, I’m Autistic and ADHD. I was very set in my ways of going to an office until WFH where I realized how much energy it sucked out of me. Between the commute to the open concept being an absolute sensory nightmare to the random coworker desk drive bys, my energy was being zapped. I actually have so much more mental space to get things done when I can better control my environment at home. When interviewing and asked if I’ll go in, I cite the ADA law for “reasonable accommodations” and say that I will absolutely go in for workshops or a day full of meetings, but because of my disability going into an office is a lot more mentally taxing on me from a sensory perspective. I say because of my sensory sensitivity, I’m a happier person and better, kinder, more productive employee when I can work from home and going into the office is a choice at my discretion. I’ve had good luck with this. I do actually like the office for certain things and will go for happy hour even. There’s just a lot going on there that I’m finally allowing myself to admit is hurting me rather than helping. Maybe you can say this forced bonding isn’t inclusive and try that angle?
I should mention my title doesn’t match - I’m in a leadership role now. My company has a done a good job keeping our remote ERGs fun by giving them a little funding so the more junior team members can connect outside of their teams. I encourage mine to use that as a way to connect and meet outside their discipline. As far as mentorship, being remote is forcing those managers that didn’t actually set specific time to connect with their employees to do so. More junior employees can still learn a lot while being remote - you just have to pay attention to it which….many managers haven’t been forced to do before the pandemic. Our juniors and associates have deserved better for years so I’m glad some managers are being forced to be more intentional.
2 days a week is not an old school way of thinking. the entitlement!
best of luck truly wish you well
It's not impossible to bond and collaborate remotely! To me, this seems like leadership making decisions simply because they desire to.
As the head of operations, do you have more leverage/flexibility with C-Suite?
If not, I'd probably cite health/safety concerns regarding pregnancy to continue WFH.
Worst part is I have to preach this old school mentality I don’t even believe in.
Health and safety it is…
