My boss has decided that I am her mentee, and she regularly gives me advice about things that don't really have to do with work, like how to handle advances from men at holiday parties or dinners or how to win more people over in meetings. To be clear, many of these things have never happened in front of her. I don't know if I should just suck it up and placate her or if at some point I should draw some line. I do like our vibe and I don't want to lose her favor or my potential to be promoted.

Your boss may be narcissistic. Check out vids on how to handle a narcissist at work. If you want to gain favor then stroke the ego and act like she is the smartest person in the room.
If you want her to stop then ignore it entirely.

Winning people over in meetings has nothing to do with work?

Since you “like your vibe” with her, I’d just roll with it. Thank her for her advice; possibly ask questions if you don’t understand where she’s coming from; possibly give your own point of view in a non-controversial way if you have a different perspective. If she just likes to hear herself talk, you can nod and smile. But it’s not like you have to follow advice that you don’t agree with.

This is twice now in back to back weeks my boss has asked me where the disconnect was in our communications because I didn’t deliver on what “was asked”, even though I know damn well what was asked and what was done were the same thing. I’m not sure if he’s changing the meaning or isn’t communicating what he’s envisioning or what but it’s embarrassing to be called out like that, and to have people think you’re the dumb 23 year old.

Need some advice here…I’m about 3 months in and a senior male associate told me to just google it when I asked him a question. I told him that hurt my feelings. After apologizing that he said that meanly but was just offering advice he has completely stopped responding to me. Was I oversensitive? Just not sure what’s going on here…

Ever had a crush on a manager? I just signed a new job offer and am worried I’m starting to develop a crush on my new manager from talking to him every week. Hoping it blows through before I start my new job in a month. I think I could also be confusing admiration/respect for romantic feelings. Curious if anyone’s dealt with this ?

How do you handle a subordinate that goes around your decision making and goes higher up in the food chain? Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)

A director in another unit wants to meet me to “continue a conversation we started last year”. He is referring to the time I had asked him if there were openings on his team. That was over a year ago. I am not too happy where I am right now ( I stayed where I was). I also don’t know if he really has an opportunity or if this is just some corporate circle jerk where my current director is trying to “smoke me out”. I don’t speak poorly of my team/work. I rattle myself when speaking with clients/seniors with thoughts like:

- “Am I making sense?” which makes me second guess myself, ruining my flow
