My firm has us under a PTO freeze through September. Says the workload is too heavy and no PTO requests during this time will be honored. We can't even put in vacation requests until this freeze ends. How is this legal?

I think firms are literally trying things to see how far they can go and how much they can get away with.

Why is a freeze so negative but a blackout isn’t? We’ve had PTO blackouts during busy seasons forever. I moved out of PA and still have “PTO blackout” periods during our busiest times. It’s part of the business 🤷🏼‍♂️

funnylikesmart

Really just frowned upon. If you get sick they should want you to stay home vs. Getting everyone else sick.

But taking a fair amount of pto during busy times, just might, be the reason you don't get raises and promotions etc.

like

That is wild.

Mental wellness is qualifies for sick time. They cannot dock you for being sick. If you happen to recover on the beaches of Aruba, so be it. 😉

I’ve never in my life heard of such a thing. I’ve heard severe restrictions during a close period, but never an entire freeze.

Can you get that in writing?
Or can you save print out the Email?
Record it on your phone?

Just call your state department of labor.
They love situations like this.

Or should.

Many firms don't allow vacation during busy season. How is this different? I guess it's a little strange not to allow requests for after the freeze/blackout but limiting when vacation can be taken is very common in seasonal businesses.

like

@Manager1, OP said it’s on now through September so again, a few months, busy season, etc.

We have different seasons in tax so part of my year is unlimited PTO, part is limited just by default because we have minimum 50-60 chargeable hour weeks, and part of my year is blackout PTO. You can’t go on vacation with a deadline coming up, that’s pretty standard in public accounting 🤷🏼‍♂️

Sounds like a typical toxic environment

I’ll take things that never happened for $500, Alex.

That is so f’ed

Wow this may be a legal question. 🙋 also what about mental health. I would take that route if needed.

I have 3 years of experience in management operations but also have 6 years of experience with child care, is that why I may be getting rejected? Maybe I’m overthinking my resume? 😅
