Did they get an engineering or math related degree. That's about average at my school, and I was only a few tenths above average. I had to make my case to Deloitte for my "low" 3.2 by showing them the average at the school I was at was significantly lower. Took a ton of leg work but I got there.
Two suggestions:
1) Break out GPA for his major only (if that's much better)
2) If he really pulled it together and can say "Dean's List for x semesters in a row Junior and Senior year, have him do that, too.
Basically, something to show stronger performance and evidence of finishing strong.
Please wish him luck!
Thanks pwc1 for doing exactly what a consultant does. Reuse someone else's work and make it look nice lolol
Thank you everyone for your help! Prepping with him for an interview tomorrow--definitely going to use the upward trend point.
Mf even ended his statement same as me. Damnnnnnn
GPA matters, but it's a piece of a pie. If you're a cinnamon apple pie with a missing slice people will still take a bite
If he majored in engineering, especially at a good school, and improved his GPA over time, you can tell a story about that. I did!
I know several people who rebounded and got good jobs despite low GPA's, and who got into top B-schools. Tell him not to give up hope!
EY1 they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but in this instance, it was me typing too slowly, and of great minds thinking alike, lol
My 3.55 major gpa saved me as well as my experiences in clubs. Many recruiters described my resume as unique and I made the case that I didn't know what I wanted and wasn't passionate until I found my major. Solid networking skills are key as well
Agree with the thoughtful posts here (upward trend, major GPA). My cumulative was definitely worse than his and had a different story (e.g. No trend or probably a negative trend but other mitigating factors). What worked for me was to find a small consulting firm and develop a niche focus that has continued to propel my career forward.
Context: he's gay, and was in the closet freshman/sophomore year. Depression/family issues made school not a priority. Has been working hard junior and senior year to get it all together and has made a lot of progress. Any advice is appreciated!
Could just say that he had abut of adjustment in the beginning and then point to his junior senior year gpa. Alternatively, he could say his cumulative is one thing but his major gpa is something else. A lot of my friends did that since they didn't graduate too high either. Best of luck
That GPA will get him a job in retail.
D2 nice
My cum. was a 2.9, had a bull shit internship, and no connections and I got several job offers all from good companies/ agencies. I didn't major in mathematics or engineering either
@K1 what was your major?
And I'm saying this to prove that gpa isn't everything but you need to prove yourself in other ways.
Hey OP tell your friend to network there ass off because at the end of the day GPA does not matter! Network, network, network! It's who you know not what you know!
@pwc1, fair. I like your style
