My office (and my team elsewhere in the firm) has a skewed partner to associate ratio (far more partners than associates). So if an associate needs extra bodies on a matter, the only option would be to pull in partners, which doesn’t really help the problem because partners often don’t want to do ‘associate work’ and clients are unhappy if they see multiple partners billing on matters. Is this common in biglaw litigation or is my office/team unique?

I have a car lease that I’m trying to get rid of in NY. My in-laws want to buy the car from my lease and give it to their mom, but I would have to buy the car out myself and then transfer the title. The plan is to have 3 people write a check to me for $10k each as a gift. Then I buyout the car using $30k. When I transfer the title to their mom, do they have to pay the tax? The buyout price ($30k) already includes sales tax, and if we have to pay tax again to transfer the title, it’s 👎

How do you navigate a job offer that is contingent on the firm calling professional references? I don’t want to tell my current firm I’m leaving for this other firm until it’s official…which means I can’t use my current bosses as references.
