Is this really performance related or just additional lay-off covered by performance separation
Expect that to be the case everywhere
Here are some positives to think about.
1. Lots of layoffs are happening right now so a gap in your job history (if it occurs) would be easily explainable by COVID.
2. They did not lay you off during the previous two rounds we had so they may be looking to retain you due to the hiring freeze.
3. If laid off you'll have several weeks of the additional $600 weekly benefit from the federal government before it runs out at the end of July. As well as probably 6 months of state unemployment to figure out your next move.

It is not legal for them to say you were terminated. Although based on experience you should just say you were when asked because if and when your new employer finds out later you will be a target not because you were laid off but lied. Many people in this industry are laid off and it’s fairly typical. I knew of a top partner from a Big 4 who was but everyone knew it was a bad move by the firm and he was immediately picked up by another big 4. Lay-offs is normal in PA

If/when you ever get laid off, I’m sure you would like empathy rather than people saying “psh KPMG is at the bottom of big 4, who let this guy post here” or mean stuff like that. It’s never fun to be laid off from any job and the last thing you need is people make a status or prestige contest
If you get fired, they’ll pay out your PTO, probably give you a few weeks pay, and then maybe a slight severance payout too (this was Deloittes approach for a few people I know). DONT put in your 2 weeks (you won’t collect anything). Plus being fired and blaming on covid isn’t too bad of an excuse..

When did you receive the invite and for when was it scheduled?
Seems like a lot of advance notice for a termination. Also a Tuesday would be an odd day to fire you (seems like Friday would be easier if that’s an option).
Either way, get that resume up to date and save whatever essential documents you may need.
