Need Help! I’m F30- KPMG B4 4-5 months ago.I’ve been nervous since and it’s getting worse.I’m nervous all day. I’m so scared for long hours of working for few months. Is it too early to say this is not for me? I’m not happy with what i’m doing.

What are you nervous about? Feeling overwhelmed, not performing, etc? I would say that everyone feels that way when they first join. But if it feels extreme, it’s ok to seek help!

like

No! Its totally not worth it. Its very brave of you to understand this is not for you too early in career itself.

You can call the EAP if you’re having emotional concerns.

like

A bunch of internet strangers can’t tell you that. Speak with a therapist and figure out what the right answers/next steps are for you. Whatever is causing this anxiety may have nothing to do with work…or may be 100% work related.

How would you know? Guessing it’s a direct correlation to the work

Things will not get better. Trust me. If you are feeling this miserable already, leave.

like

Agree, I think Big4 is not for everyone. I’m more concerned OP will suffer mentally issues if OP stay there. As a result, it is not worth it.

Learning new things can put you in an uncomfortable place. Once you understand the role and expectations, the anxiety should subside.
Give it another couple months. If no change, seek a therapist or new job.

like

If you feel it at the entry level, you will be burnt out sooner and getting frustrated. There are still years to go, you just need to relax a bit, I know it’s hard but at least give it a try. It will cause you mental health for a long term. Best luck!

I’ve been there.

D1 is right - a therapist can help you sort out why you feel so scared and nervous. I was in the same spot - I had decision paralysis because I was so scared of messing up or asking a stupid question that I asked none at all and was underperforming. I got to the root of the cause in therapy and my confidence picked up and my performance rating sky rocketed.

It could be that the Big 4 “up or out” isn’t a good environment for you or it could be something else entirely.

I joined the firm 6 months ago and I'm feeling exactly what you're feeling. This will be my 6th busy season (to be fair, all 5 were done at the 5th and the 8th, not at Big 4). I ask myself all the time. Why did you take this job. Do you have what it takes. Learning new things puts you in that place and makes you question your ability. You're constantly running into things that are new to you (I know how to audit. But the technology, methodology, clients, teams and admin process... Everything else is new) and it makes me feel stupid and I get mad at myself for not knowing things that I "feel like" I should know.

Unless you're absolutely miserable, I think it's too early to tell. Do one busy season and see how you feel. People who are self-aware tend to be high performers and they feel this way because they are their toughest critics.

like

Give yourselves a break. It’s a lot of information and a lot to learn but the fact you are here says you are worthy to be here. There is enough stress and difficulty in these jobs (which is why there is so much upward potential). Don’t add to your stress by talking yourselves down

like

This normal. Are you an entry level?

Then it is completely normal. Just ride it out. Build relationships with your team. This will go away.

like

Sounds like you have commitment issues.

I’m just curious, what did you expect work would be like at a B4? I had a clear idea it was going to be hard work but that hard work would be rewarded with promotion and money. I think if you don’t like it though would recommend a career change but would do some soul searching and really understand what you want before making a jump.

I would say that although big4 are known for long hours, you make the decision yourself.

In general I personally for example, draw a line and don't do more than 50 hours a week nor eoild i work a weekend and I wouldn't do that for 4 months. However, I know people who have worked for 70+ hours a week for a month or 2, but they were fine with it.

I think to an extent you need to draw a line as to what you are willing to do and are happy with and also you need to speak up and say when it's getting too much. The reason I say this is because if you do not speak up or draw your own line, then things will stay the same. In my first busy season, I worked normal hours due to being overstaffed, but the next one, I worked 50 hours for 2 months and learned I probably wouldn't do that again.

Speak to your performance manager and see what they say, but ultimately, if you haven't done a busy season yet, you won't know if it's as bad as you imagine it to be.

Hope this helps.
