I just tell people that the main thing a CFP is good for is hourly planning. Outside of that, it is marketing and doesn’t automatically mean competence.
CFP is for estate planning and in-depth tax discussions. Outside of that, if you’re a competent Advisor - the clients he refers you to likely don’t need a CFP. There are good CFP’s and bad CFP’s, just like there are good/bad Advisors. Take the CPA aside and show him/her your process with your clients.
Ask them if they think a CFP is comparable to the CPA? Do they think a test that can easily be studied and passed in 30-60 days all online is comparable to a CPA? Is a designation controlled by every states board equivalent to 12 people at the college of financial planning board?
If they answer yes to all of those, walk away, you don’t want those referrals.
Why not get one? It seems like that's the trend. I know everyone in my office is studying
Yeah, you can navigate this. Stand tall and tell your clients what you think it's good for
Yeah, the CFP isn’t just good for hourly planning. And although it doesn’t mean you’re competent, it is the standard designation for the industry in which you want to work and be taken seriously, so why not get it?
