I was teamed with a junior art director (she was 24) on a little job (I’m 36) and she didn’t want to call. She didn’t have the time. She sent things directly to the CD without talking with me. When I made a suggestion for the deck she told me “no, this is not how I do my decks’. It was a terrible experience. I stayed kind throughout the process.

Ugh!!!!
OP Concepting works best however you are comfortable, can be over the phone, chat, video chat or whatsapp, there’s not right or wrong formula. And talking over people has nothing to do with age.

This happens because over half of art directors are graphic designers. Agencies need to conduct better interviews.
This is so true. The minute every AD was expected to comp and make decks, the role of an AD became muddled. An art director used to direct designers. Now they are expected to be one too, leaving little room for concepting.

...while s/he is sharing an idea with you. Do not text or slack while s/he is sharing an idea with you. Do not drop design explorations into a shared doc and expect your writer to make them into a concept. Omg. Your creative partner is your equal even if you are staff and s/he is a freelancer. Even if s/he has decades of experience on you and you were just an intern a few years ago. Respect. Omg.
What if it’s a bad idea and you have better things to do

It gets worse every generation IMO and I know people's gonna get defensive and someone's gonna trigger happily report me.
So when I defer, and you’re wrong, how I will I be compensated for when I was right?
I’ve also dealt with the opposite where my partner wanted to concept together on EVERYTHING.
Makes sense! I have actually had my AD partner or sometimes an ACD ask me very specific design questions or I've had some design suggestions or thoughts. To say, "this is your job and this my job" defeats the purpose of true collaboration. But also, everyone works differently.

I actually ended up reaching out to the internal recruiter who booked me. I let her know the creative partnership is not a good fit, in terms of yielding the best work. Now you he creative lead wants a meeting with me to see how things are going. I can't say, "the kid talks over me and is impossible to collaborate with." What is the most grown-up way to articulate why I cannot work with this person. This is new ro me. Usually I will just suck it ip and be miserable for the duration of the booking.
Amazing- I’m in a similar spot. Was partnered with a very junior creative for this gig who frankly I’m not sure knows how the whole creative concepting process works. I have a senior title so not sure why we were put together but the work is suffering and it’s exhausting to essentially have to rebrief this person when we meet for brainstorms because they didn’t get it during the actual briefing. I feel hesitation to speak up because I’m freelance but seems like you were successful? They are full time.
Agreed. Fairly new myself but it’s hard to find a partner who understands this! A lot of people I started with have never worked in an office and literally get zoom fatigue from being in calls with others
Also, those of us who “came up” during the pandemic have not really been managed properly or taught the “right way” to do a lot of stuff. Would not be surprised if, like 2020/2021 college grads, our earning potential is affected by this forever
Yes, and sketching skills are vital.

Thank you for giving my WK dreams some hope.
Thank you for your comment. In-House marketing departments are the worse. No respect to anyone with experience and no etiquette at all when being spoken to. Brainstorming together seems to be new to creatives coming out of school.

I wish I went to ad school. Even years in the industry, I feel behind and like I’m missing skills.

Same. No school no training no portfolio. Read everything I could find and I had/have a genuine passion for what I do. Worked in 4 countries, multiple cities. We over index on portfolio schools as though they solve everything. They're there for the connections and placement if it works out. The creatives who suck go to portfolio schools and still have nothing to show for it. We have SO MUCH resources at our disposal today it's a joke compared to when I started 15 years ago.
