Yeah this is a dumb thing the app does, but A1 is right. When you qualify for status, it lasts for the rest of the year and the following year
It expires and your status is based on your flying in 2018. You may be able to extend if United offers you a buy up to a status level, these tend to be ridiculously overpriced. If you’re close to a status level, you could consider a mileage run (booking a long and cheap itinerary just to fly it)

I just got Platinum last night and my platinum card on the app says “valid through Jan 2019”
My new card for example: totally sucks if I’ll only have the status for a month and a half...
