I remember those days myself. I really don't know why this has happened. We managed to get along just fine with a nearly three month summer break when I was a kid.
Our summer break was only seven weeks this year. Shortest summer ever and I think they are planning on making next year's break even shorter. When do we stop pretending and just go year round?
They better PAY us if we are going year round. Salaries would need at least a 20% raise. And expect me to use ALL my personal and sick time.
This was the same for me too. But I now have one week off for spring break, three weeks off for winter break, and one week off for Thanksgiving. I did not have this as a student in elementary or high school.
Why do you say we hate "summer vacation all of a sudden" I love my vacation.. to the end!
I don't think they meant "we" as in us teachers, but "we" as in society that keeps whittling away at the summer vacation. Perhaps it's due to the learning loss that has been observed. Perhaps it's also an artifact of the amount of work parents are doing to stay afloat in our economy. Having the kids out of school for 2 months straight is more of a hassle than a blessing for many families.
180 days is a180 days....

This is going to be an unpopular thing to say, but it is beyond time to make school year round. Letting kids stay home all summer to play video games and watch their phones is a waste of time and harmful to their brain development.

Yes! A salary increase would be needed. I am not suggesting that it should be year round without breaks- I am thinking that the education system needs an overhaul to make teaching more sustainable and learning more meaningful and effective. All kinds of schedule possibilities exist if we think outside the box. It could even be done with the same amount of time off- just structured differently and spread out more. 8-10 consecutive weeks off may not be the best way. It is time to consider other options. What we are doing now seems ineffective.
