Strategery.
...nebulous, hollow, buzzwordy “new strategic direction.”
Been there 😞
I thought it was getting better with JP gone but JN has been here almost a year and it seems worse than ever. No one in management is trustworthy, they talk constantly about how integral and awesome the employees are but think nothing of burning them out. I think Paul is to blame more than anyone.
Considering the last Chief Growth Officer lasted 6 months (?), seems like the issues are deeply systemic at this point. Seems like a lot of potential there but also hear of some rot across teams. The Village model doesn’t work when the leaders aren’t working together.
Prior to the all agency meeting, they could be heard having a bout of rip roaring laughter in Paul’s office. Must’ve been a fun day.
Is this about the Cannes lion I put on my desk when I started?
Every agency person who aspires to rise to leadership needs IMO to learn about the financial side. It’s brutal. And layoffs are always the one and only blunt force instrument to rectify a slide in revenue.
Most other costs are fixed. Staffing is variable. Simple as that.
It’s really interesting to see how different agencies are handling these “adjustments” these days. Some are being completely transparent by saying to the remaining staff — we can’t afford to keep everybody on salary because of X and Y revenue issues.
Then people presumably take away that while their own job was spared this time, the entire system doesn’t support long term job security. Or you assess your client relationships and forecast your own outlook.
Then you choose a course of action that fits your career aspirations. It’s the agency career advice I got as a junior and was reinforced as I worked my way up. Seems reasonable.
Looks like the 2 best creatives there were let go. And no, I’m not one of them. But have worked with them both and they actually know good work.
Unfortunately you are wrong.
At least they didn’t call an all agency meeting boast about the “impressive earnings” for that quarter. I remember Havas doing that once immediately after layoffs.
What team got laid off?
A long time ago I worked at a place that had a round of layoffs, and they called a meeting like that. And I was all young and full of beans then, so I put up my hand and said “is everyone here safe from being laid off?” And the CEO guy sputtered through a “yes, dont worry” type answer.
The next day when we got to work there was a letter on everyones desk (thats how long ago this was) about how “Dan’s answer was not to be construed as....”
Thats how we knew none of what they said meant anything.
NY or CHI?
Oof. Sorry. How many?
JN?
