The new company I’m at now sent me an email from an email address that was HR@companyName.careers saying I was accepted for the position. They gave me paperwork to fill out and sign to accept the position
I fill out the paperwork and send it back to them and it goes through… then a few days later I go back to the email to say something else and I get this…?
Then today I got a check from the company In the mail to setup my home office, and it’s signed by someone I’ve never met before or heard of…?
What…..

The pay cut to chase your dream doesn’t seem too crazy since you’re still going to have a comfy salary. The travel piece makes me think maybe you wait for another option to chase your dream. :) Sounds like you won’t be short of opportunities in the future!
Ahh that’s super super helpful. I didn’t totally hate my 45 min commute right out of college that was just sitting on 1 train but I was also really young with a 9-5 job... and 45 min isn’t 1 hour, being 2 blocks from the train on each end isn’t the same as 10-15 min walking on each end... I will definitely try my darndest to negotiate successfully for remote!
The move sounds potentially not worth it, but that aside, I wouldn't sweat the pay cut. Still a comfortable income regardless.
(I took a pay cut to come to Bain; my spouse took a pay cut to leave IB... chasing $$ is not the most important part of career.)
One thought: this move, exciting enough in itself as I’m sure it must be, is not the end - it could end up being a stepping stone in itself. I personally think staying for longer is not going to improve your exits that much unless you actually see a clear pathway to doing sustainability work at Bain, so moving and getting the experience now has its merits if this is your long term goal.

I would look for a job doing this remote. Why does someone in sustainability have to go to the office every day? Makes no sense.
Also echo the other comment; I had a principal friend transfer over to become an expert track sustainability person at BCG. That’s a good route and your pay won’t change.
Your pay will change at Bain if you do this - like 20% ish pay cut generally speaking. Also has to be a slot open.
I just exited at manager and have no regrets. The pay gap / drop is only going to grow the longer you stay at Bain and make it harder to take something else that you may find more fulfilling. Don’t let all the carrots consulting dangles keep you in a place that makes you unhappy.
And as mentioned, the pay drop isn’t necessarily forever. It’s just a first stop on the journey of your new career.
Thank you thank you - and congratulations on your new move!! Hopefully will be following you soon :)
If you’re taking a pay cut, everything else should be perfect IMO. Why compromise on multiple fronts?
I have a lot of friends in esg starts ups so have this conversation with them a lot. I think the time is right if you want to take a pay cut now. The return in the future will probably be worth it as executive levels continue to expand to accommodate esg legislation.

Does your dream include living in NYC? As someone who spent 5 years there, I couldn’t go back.
Other problem is, the sustainability job would either require me (and my boyfriend) to move to NY (we’d sell our house here and buy another in an NY suburb, 1 hour train commute) or to successfully negotiate being remote and flying in when needed. I can’t decide if I’d rather just rip off the bandaid and move vs. travel... and how to think about that playing into comp. I know only I can answer what I want but... Thoughts? Advice? Reactions? Help 😫
Can you work on getting some kind of sustainability certificate while you’re still at Bain? It will boost your profile and perhaps enable you to get better offers/ pay packages. Also EY has a Climate Change and Sustainability Services practice and we just went carbon neutral as a firm, and looking to do far more in this area in the market
