I’ve never seen a briefcase on a woman out in the wild.
Rising Star
I have 2 (a black coach and a brown Dooney); they were law school graduation gifts and I used to carry them a ton (still busy them out for n certain occasions). They are fairly slim but hold a laptop, legal pad, a few file folders, and other typical purse stuff.
Enthusiast
Neverfull - never liked labeled bags as a teenager but it is just so practical
Tom Ford makes a similar. Also discreet
My mom carried a gucci briefcase to court in the 80s and I won’t ever let her forget it
Your mom is A BOSS in my opinion.
I love my Cuyana tote with organizer insert!
Same!
LV on the go GM is my go to!
I considered the on the go but hate the straps. Only a top handle or a weird long one? Nah.
I’m in big law and the answer is no, including for most men. Most people use a nice back packs (like tumi), some women use fancy tote bags.
Love my tumi backpack! Especially if you travel for work, or commute on a train/subway, backpack is the way to go. I would also invest in a nice tote, though, to have on hand when you want to feel a bit more dressed up.

Most people I know use nice totes (make sure it’ll fit your firm laptop) or something like the Lo & Sons OG2. If you’re in a city where people use public transportation you’ll see more backpacks. I love my Mark & Graham Zoe tote for everyday but use my OG 2 when I travel.
I have the Lo & Sons Seville tote and I love it!
If there were a designer who made briefcases specifically for women, I'd make them rich. But I have an assortment of tote bags from Coach and Tumi that I can fit my laptop and legal notepads into.
I used to carry a tote, but changed to a backpack post-pandemic. It’s easier on the back and shoulders and also safer. Safety, including robbery in the middle of the day have unfortunately become more rampant. One of our return to work safety tips was to not carry a handbag.
I think this really depends on where you live (are you taking the subway to work in NYC or driving to work, if taking public transportation, do you need things like a change of shoes, water bottle, casual or gym clothes to change into later?) and also on whether you need to take your laptop back and forth with you everyday. I usually go to the office with my regular small purse because I don’t need to bring my laptop daily and I drive so anything else I need can stay in the car. Back when depositions and court appearances were in person I would use a tote whenever I knew I’d be out of the office and needed to bring a laptop and notepad. I’ve also kept a tote or very thin briefcase in my office in case of unexpected outings. And I have a large briefcase on wheels I only use for trials.
I have a ysl niki tote and a Burberry backpack which I switch every now and then

Victorinox divine brief-tote. It's so great.
I’ve been using the Cuyana structure leather tote for the longest time but am I’m thinking about upgrading to the Saint Laurent Shopper Tote in black.
Me and my everlane backpack work well at my V10 and no one cares.
Can’t go wrong with Tumi.
