I think she should look at it from the perspective of “would her attending take a spot away from a minority?” If they have unlimited funds and she was just doing recruiting, then okay. But if it was to give minorities exposure and network, she does not belong.
I don’t think we needed additional recruiters as much as we needed representation from our company to show that we are a diverse and inclusive company. I just don’t know how to break that down to her. It was not weird that she wanted to go, it was just breaking down why it made more sense for professionals of color to attend. I am not great with these convos lol . Immediately, I did think about whose spot would you be taking by attending. I am not going to revisit the convo with her but will try and research other opportunities for her to participate in either recruiting or conferences.
I’d encourage anyone who wants to be included in events targeted towards minority professionals to try to attend events by their local chapters. My guess is your company didn’t want to give free trips to NOLA, so they were selective in their choices.
She can help her case next time by showing her intentions by being involved prior to the national event. I’d try to organize your coworkers to attend local events. This can help provide more transparency in the selection process next time, since it will be easy to say those who attended other events or are members were picked.
I’d be mad my org of support group based on cultural experience didn’t throw a party in NOLA too and I had to watch my coworkers celebrate life out of town on Bourbon St. Especially if it was expensed. Maybe next time she could be blacker. Take a class at an HBCU or something and she might be a better candidate.
If it was solely based on work experience, education and professional licenses held, she would not be my first pic. Everyone who attended had ties to the organization as a student, is a current recruiter, or had hiring ability. I did visit Bourbon street and it was fun. It was really fun drinking and eating street tacos as an accomplished Black professional with a CPA license and a graduate degree working on another graduate degree because sometimes I get bored. … that I am not paying for mind you. The second graduate degree that the military is paying for due to my years of service to this country. As accomplished, experienced and educated as I am … I am not so detached from the plight of mediocrity in my office that I am unable to sympathize with people who believe they are entitled to things for merely existing.
I'm confused. You're saying she felt excluded, and I think the implication is that she was excluded based on race. But then you are also saying that a diverse group went, and that everyone that went had ties, was a recruiter, or had hiring capability. I assume she did not tick those boxes. You also said if it was based on merit alone, she also did not make the cut.
These all sound like valid reasons. I think understanding her motivation to attend is a good start, and then understanding what her goals are, and then helping her see her own path at the company. Feeling left out usually comes from misunderstanding or low self esteem.
Thank you for your comment. I re-engaged with her and discussed her interests in recruiting. She is studying for her CPA and is almost done. When she has it wrapped up (Spring 2024) I was going to connect her with our professional and student hire recruiting team. She can do it now actually but her preference is after the year end.
